Pregame Tailgate

The dome parking lots were full of UTSA tents and rigs. They had converted Sunset Station into a festival area with live music, corporate swag booths, restaurants and beer.

Runners take the field

They booed the visiting team as they came onto the field, and it was LOUD. It set the tone for the rest of the game, and you could tell that it shellshocked Northeastern State, who normally plays in a 5000 person stadium.

When the Runners came out, Enter Sandman is on the sound system, fireworks start popping from right in front of the student section.

Game

Lower bowl was full, but the endzone seats still had space.

I'm from San Antonio, and have been to the Alamobowl ten years or so. There is no way on earth that the official attendance of 50K is correct based on those pictures. Looks more like 30K, tops.

Their tailgating looks like a high school team, but not bad for a first-year program.

So UTSA, a start up, schedules a DII and SFA a SLC regular and nationally ranked in the FCS schedules a DIII for the home opener. Awesome.

I wont even bother tracking down tailgating pics, but suffice to say you are wrong on that one as well.

That's a lot of people.

But like I said, if they were giving tickets away, the population south of I-10 would be there. It's a San Antonio thing.

When they quit giving tickets away, those numbers are going to dry up REALLY, REALLY fast.

I thought UTSA was smart to schedule a game like this for their first time. They have to build a brand and nobody knew how they were going to play. I compare it to scheduling a homecoming game.

Some alumni do not make it back to every game, so homecoming is their one chance to see the team. This first game was like a homecoming to many fans I talked to on Friday and Saturday. People came back to see it because they never thought it was going to happen (kind of like when the Rangers went to the World Series). Give them a game that they can easily win and celebrate. They'll tell two friends, and they'll tell two friends, and so on and so on.

I believe it was less an indictment on UTSA (First year schedule should be "soft" since it's the first time these kids are playing together), and more of an indictment on SFA.

After all, a start up schedules a DII team, but SFA, a team that was picked (I believe) to win the SLC last year picks a DIII team to open the season against? It's really... sad for SFA.

To keep on topic, good for UTSA. Glad to see they started the season off with a bang and a win. Hope they can keep it up on both fronts (attendance and wins). It was smart to have two "lesser" teams on the schedule before moving on to "bigger" teams. Hope they work out the kinks to the point that they are operating on all cylinders for their big road game in two weeks.

Ok, entire stadium holds 68K, bottom portion holds only 30K, not 34K.....I know because I've gone to Cowboys training camp when the entire bottom portion is full and they announce the attendance at a little under 25K.

Both sides of the upper endzone are practically empty. That's 8K seats on each side. Upper level is sparsely populated, that's about 10K on each side. Club seat level is empty at the luxury suites.

So quick math:

Bottom portion with huge holes in the corners and endzone: maybe 25K in attendance.

Club Level: maybe 2K on both sides

Upper sideline mostly empty: maybe 8K on both sides

Upper corners: maybe 3K combined.

Total attendance by that very liberal count: 38K.........which is not bad, but far from the 56K that was announced for the game. Again, having gone to Alamobowl when Tech has played there and brought 60K fans was a completely different sight than what the photos show, unless you took them before kickoff.

Taxman - let's let them enjoy, and enjoy with them, the start of their football program. Sometimes your negativeness adds some needed levity, but this is nothing more than a major attempt to spoil a very exciting time for our fellow school to the south. Rivalry is fine, but this is going way beyond that.
