great read on the vb program's success this year: Fresh faces, veteran coach cooking up the right mix at Texas State

didn't realize we'd been doing all this w/o porter, who was our best returning player. :shock:

@AVCAVolleyball
Congrats to @TexasStateVball Setter Emily DeWalt for winning the @SportsImportsVB / AVCA Player of the Week!

@TexasStateVball
A HUGE congratulations to Emily DeWalt, who is the first player in school history to be named the @AVCA National Player of the Week!

Emily DeWalt was honored as the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon.

The freshman setter became the first player in Texas State volleyball history to win the award. She's also the fourth player in Sun Belt Conference history to be bestowed the honor, joining Western Kentucky's Amanda Schiff (Nov. 10, 2003), Middle Tennessee State's Ashley Adams (Sept. 6, 2005) and WKU's Jordyn Skinner (Sept. 13, 2011).

DeWalt helped Texas State collect home wins over Little Rock and Arkansas State this past week. She quarterbacked an offense that finished with a cumulative .305 attack percentage, which was .041 percentage points higher than the second-best team from the conference over the course of the last week. The Bobcats also tallied 17.29 kills per set, which was 2.54 kills/set higher than the next-closest Sun Belt school, and 16.29 assists per set, which was first in the league by an average of 2.41 assists/set.

The Helotes, Texas, native had double-doubles in both matches, upping her Sun Belt lead to 11 this season. She averaged 14.00 assists per set (98) and 3.43 digs per set (24), while adding six kills, four aces and a block. She had 55 assists and 14 digs against LR and tallied 43 assists and 10 digs against A-State. Both assist totals were the most this season by a Sun Belt player in a three- and four-set match, respectively.

DeWalt was also named the Sun Belt Setter and Freshman of the Week for her performance. She is both the first setter and the first freshman to win the national laurel this season.

Texas State is slated to compete against UT Arlington at 6:30 p.m. tonight inside Strahan Arena. The contest will double as the 12th Annual Pink Match for Texas State. In conjunction with their bout with the Mavericks, TXST will take donations and hold a silent auction as part of the annual contest to help promote cancer awareness. The silent auction will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be open until the 15th point is scored in the third set. All proceeds stay local and support Pink Heals Hays County.

made the match tonight, bobcats in 5: 20-25, 22-25, 25-10, 25-21, 15-8

been saying it for a while now, and it was true again tonight - there are chunks of sets where the girls just don't have their heads screwed on straight, and it costs them. the 1st 2 set losses were almost entirely on us. tonight truly could/should have been a sweep.

uta had one legit offensive weapon, and we couldn't do anything w/ her the 1st 2 sets. even when we got hands up, she was tooling the block. annoying to watch 1 player, w/ only 1 shot, almost walk us out of our own gym.

husky had a really off night - she just wasn't on at all, especially early. bummer, because i was really excited to see her play. she had some nice swings later on in the match.

dinwiddie has got to be greedier and decide that every single ball that comes over on anything but a hard drive is hers. too many easy balls hit the court and she's caught looking.

dewalt is so freaking good. she's just on another level. i realize that's probably obvious, given her accolades, but seeing her in person is a different deal. she's an excellent server, defends at the net, and absolutely busts her ass to get to the ball and make the play.

daigle is probably my favorite player. kills it at the net, both on o and d, great server, and cares about winning more than everyone else. she's a badass.

we have a LOT of offensive weapons - 6 legit pin hitters. if we can figure out defense on soft balls, drop the service errors and do a better job attacking/limiting free balls, this team is going to be dangerous come december.

also: whoever is in charge of the gameday experience for football is probably in charge of volleyball too. blasting music and doing t-shirt tosses getting the crowd all riled up...when we're serving?!?! do that shit when the OPPONENT is serving, jerky!

The players requested that, actually. Prior to the season they all selected individual songs that they wanted to have played before they serve.

fair enough on the music, as i can see that being like a batter's walkup song. but the t-shirt tosses and getting the crowd hyped is counter to every other vb venue i've ever been in. on that note, the uta bench's distraction noises were equally funny/annoying as all get out (intended purpose) - kudos to them for the creativity and enthusiasm.

they also need to work on the sound levels during the intros. the background music is overpowering the announcer doing the player names. announcer mic needs some tuning as well, as it was tough making out pretty much anything said. the hype video they play before the cats are announced is pretty cool too.

no pow awards this week

back home this weekend - toughest conference matchups all season.

appst on fri: 13-5, 5-1; rpi 120, sos 239
no good wins and a few bad losses. swept by both 8-9 utah valley, and ualr (at home).

coastal on sat: 5-7, 4-0; rpi 118, sos 82 (short 2 games due to florence)
they haven't faced 2 elite teams like we have, but they have 4 losses vs top 50rpi and 2 vs traditional power hawaii. no good wins though - their conf wins are vs the bottom 4 teams in the west.
they won the conf last 2 years and won their 1st round ncaa game 2 years ago.

for reference, we are currently at 35 rpi w/ an sos of 50.

ladies come out BLAZIN in the 1st vs coastal! up 12-3 before coastal calls a t/o..t/o does no good and cats up 14-3 before cc finally breaks the run. bobcats take set 1, 25-17

up 10-6 in the 2nd, coastal runs off 4 straight to tie....cc takes the lead at 17-16...cats run 3, cc t/o @ 19-17...cc ties it at 20...t/o txst...cc goes up 22-20...then 23-21 and another txst t/o... cc wins set 2, 25-22

back and forth all 3rd set, but cats close strong and take it 25-20

out strong in the 4th, up 7-3...up 19-13...cc runs 5 straight to 19-18, t/o txst, cats close it out 25-21.

bigtime win. strong, strong showing by the cats this weekend.

18-5, 9-0
13 straight wins
