Post Mid-Week Games Thread - Prairie View A&M/UTRGV
For the only time in the 2017 season, the Bobcats will play two mid-week games as they host Prairie View A&M on Tuesday night and Texas-Rio Grande Valley on Wednesday night. This will be the 2nd week of the regular season in which TXST plays a 5-game week as they opened the season with 4 games vs. Purdue and a mid-week tilt vs. Baylor. The Bobcats are exactly halfway through the 56 game regular season, sitting at 17-11 overall and 6-3 in Sun Belt conference games.

Schedule/Probable Pitching Matchup:
PVAMU - Tuesday - 6pm:
#32 RHP Cam Baird (0-2, 5.60 ERA) vs. #20 RHP Tyler Laux (0-4, 7.80 ERA)
UTRGV - Wednesday - 6:15pm:
TBD vs. #21 RHP Eddie Delgado (2-2, 7.33 ERA)

We originally announced Brandon Courville would start Tuesday against Prairie View and Baird would start vs. UT-RGV. They moved Baird back up to face the Panthers tonight however and haven't announced who would start against the Vaqueros. Honestly I think I'd prefer to save Baird to pitch against UTRGV on Wednesday. We should be able to beat Prairie View with just about anyone on the mound. We have 3 usual bullpen guys that made starts early in the season with Courville, Pagano, and Brandon Lewis. Not sure who to expect on Wednesday and we could go with a staff day against the Vaqueros.

Prairie View Outlook:
Prairie View is, for lack of a better term, bad. They are 12-22 on the season. That includes a 5-1 record against non-D1 teams giving them a record of 7-21 vs. D1 competition. They are 6-6 in the SWAC, but the SWAC is rated dead last of 31 D1 conferences. They are a bit hot lately however, coming off a series win at Grambling where they won 2 of 3. They swept a doubleheader last Tuesday against non-D1 Huston-Tillotson and are 5-1 in their last 6 games. Texas State is 38-1 all-time vs. Prairie View and Harrington has never lost to the Panthers. This game will be an RPI killer as PVAMU has an RPI of 281.

Prairie View Starting Pitcher:
Tyler Laux will get the ball for the Panthers, making his 6th start of the season. Laux has pitched 30 innings through 7 appearances and 5 starts on the season amassing a 7.80 ERA with 19 strikeouts and 11 walks with a .287 opponents batting average. Laux has given up 6 homers on the season, the most on the Panthers roster. Laux hasn't started a game since March 19th at Southern and his last two appearances were in relief. He has taken the loss in all 4 of his starts this season.

Prairie View Hitting:
The best hitter on the team is RF Cody Den Beste. Den Beste has started all 33 games for the Panthers hitting .352 in 122 ABs. He has 9 doubles, 4 triples, and 2 homers with 20 RBI and is slugging .541. LF lead-off man Avery Williams has been hot lately after not beginning the season as a regular starter. Williams became an every day starter a few weeks ago and is hitting .351 on the season with 5 doubles, 2 triples, 2 homers and a .614 slugging %. CF Corbin Jamison is another player to watch hitting .306. The Panthers have a dangerous outfield with Den Beste, Williams, and Jamison. As a team they hit .257.

Texas-Rio Grande Valley Outlook:
UT-RGV is a much more dangerous team than Prairie View is. They are 18-14 overall and 2-4 in WAC play. They started the season 8-0 though all 8 games were against SWAC competition. They swept 4 games from Texas Southern before sweeping 4 games from Prairie View to start the season. They have won their last 2 games, taking 2 of 3 from CSU-Bakersfield in Bakersfield this past weekend, but are just 2-7 in their last 9 games including getting swept at home by Utah Valley and losses to Texas and TCU. This won't be a great game for RPI purposes either as UTRGV sits at 212 currently. We really need to do our best to sweep both these games as home losses to 200+ teams can really harm your RPI (we are currently at 105).

UTRGV Starting Pitching:
Eddie Delgado will be making his 6th start of the season Wednesday for the Vaqueros. Unfortunately for us this will be just the 4th game of the week for UTRGV and the 5th of the week for us, giving the Vaqueros a decided pitching advantage. We will use up our #4 guy vs. Prairie View and will presumably have a less rested bullpen. I'd prefer to save Baird for UTRGV and pitch relievers vs. Prairie View as we should be able to beat PV regardless of who throws. Delgado is 2-2 on the season through 6 appearances and 5 starts with 27 innings pitched. He's struck out 25 and walked 18 and allows a .287 BA. Delgado made his first start on the 2nd week of the season and has been the mid-week/#4 guy all season.

UTRGV hitting:
The 2 main guys for the Vaqueros are LF Jose Garcia and CF Conrad McMahon. Garcia is hitting .352 with 10 doubles in 108 ABs. He also leads the team in homers with 4. As a team the Vaqueros have hit 13 homers this year (compared to 25 for the Bobcats). McMahon is hitting .319 but is only slugging .362. With 2 doubles and no homers he isn't a huge power threat.

Long week for the team playing their 4th and 5th games of the week in these two games then turning around to head to Little Rock to start a series with the Trojans on Friday. Need to try and get through these two games with 2 wins and limited resources used. That may be asking a lot, but need to get up to Little Rock in position to take a series on the road vs. a struggling Little Rock team. Particularly after the bad weekend we just had at home vs. Arkansas State. We are still tied atop the western division with Louisiana through 3 weeks of conference play.

TXST beats PVAMU 10-1. Bobcats now 18-11 overall.

Baird gets the win with 8 IP and 7 strikeouts. Atwood, who hadn't pitched since the Purdue series, closes out the 9th so bullpen fully in tact for UTRGV tomorrow. Guess is Courville will get the start and if we have to go to the bullpen early we won't extend anyone to keep the bullpen as fresh as possible for Little Rock this weekend.

First pitch at 6:15 tomorrow night for UTRGV.

Does anyone know if B. Lewis has been injured or is his absence just performance based. I was hoping he would step up this year considering he pitched pretty well last year.

Can't say for sure, but I assume performance based.

In 3 appearances and 1 start he's sporting a slick 30.86 ERA and allowing a .583 batting average....

He hasn't pitched since the Oklahoma State series back in February.

My guess is Courville starts tonight and goes as long as he can then we give it over to the bullpen with nobody pitching more than an inning. Wouldn't be surprised if we use 7-8 pitchers tonight.

Also of note. This is our final mid-week home game of the season.

13 mid-week games this year. The first 8 all in San Marcos and the final 5 all on the road.

Odd scheduling. Only 10 home games left on the entire season.

Beating Prairie View at home dropped our RPI 6 spots from 105 to 111.

And it wasn't a good start...

1 inning. 4 hits, 4 runs, all earned, and 3 walks.
He managed to up his ERA from 30.86 to 32.40...

The good news? Brandon Courville pitched 4.1 solid innings to get the win as the Bobcats still won 11-9.

Lewis looked bad and Walden had a shaky 9th giving up 3 with a 5 run cushion but Courville and the middle relief were good and the bats put up 11 runs on 13 hits aided by 5 UTRGV errors.

Cats now 19-11 on the season overall heading into a road series at Little Rock starting Friday. Little Rock has been struggling lately.

Also, the ladies beat Texas 2-1 in extras to sweep the season series with the longhorns this year. Nice evening at the ballpark and softball complex tonight.

Fikac said he has been battling some injuries on the pregame interview. After last nights performance he may not get another chance this season. I hope I'm wrong.
