Post Series Thread - Vs. #20 Coastal Carolina
Sun Belt Conference play starts this weekend as the Bobcats have a much anticipated series with the defending national champions with Coastal Carolina.

Schedule/Probable Pitching Matchup:
Friday - 6pm
RHP Connor Reich (1-1, 5.17 ERA) vs. RHP Alex Cunningham (2-0, 3.51 ERA)
Saturday - 4:05pm
LHP Wes Engle (2-0, 4.03 ERA) vs. RHP Andrew Beckwith (0-1, 7.84 ERA)
Sunday - 1pm
RHP Nicholas Fraze (2-1, 5.95 ERA) vs. RHP Jason Bilous (2-0, 4.29 ERA)

Coastal Outlook:
Obviously the big news with Coastal is they won the national championship last year. The Chanticleers went 55-18 last year and 21-3 in the Big South. This is their first season competing in the Sun Belt conference and tonight's game will be their first ever Sun Belt Conference baseball game.

A season ago, Coastal breezed through the Big South tournament, going 4-0 to win the championship and get an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. They had to go on the road to Raleigh for their regional however and after beating Saint Mary's they had to beat NC State twice in 3 games to win the regional. They were sent to Baton Rouge for their super regional and swept LSU 11-8 and 4-3 to punch their ticket to Omaha for the College World Series. They went 6-2 in Omaha to win the national championship. They opened the tournament beating Florida before losing to TCU. They then beat Texas Tech before having to beat TCU in back to back games to make it to the championship series with Arizona. They lost the first game with Arizona then beat them back to back to win it all.

They are just 11-7 so far in 2017. Tonight's game will be just their 2nd away game of the season as they've played 17 of 18 games in Conway so far. They've also only played one 3-game series on the season up to this point (last weekend they took 2 of 3 from Illinois). They've played in 3 early season tournaments, all 3 of which they've hosted. Their mid-week game this week was postponed so they haven't played a game since their Saturday doubleheader with Illinois.

Starting Pitching:
The Bobcats are making a change to the weekend rotation after using the same rotation for the last 3 weekends. Connor Reich, who was the opening day starter but hasn't started a game since, moves back into the Friday night role. Meanwhile, Anthony Pagano, who started the last 3 Friday nights moves completely out of the weekend rotation. Don't ask me the reasoning, as I have no idea. No change to Saturday and Sunday as Engle and Fraze stay in the #2 and #3 slots.

Alex Cunningham is the Coastal ace and will start on Friday night. Cunningham was drafted by the Tigers last year but decided to return to Coastal for his senior season. He was named 3rd team preseason all-American this year by Collegiate Baseball. He is 2-0 on the season through 4 starts with a 3.51 ERA. In 25.2 innings he has struck out 31 and only walked 7 and is allowing a .253 opponents batting average.

Things don't get any easier in game 2 on Saturday when 2016's CWS most outstanding player takes the mound for the Chanticleers in Andrew Beckwith. Beckwith is easily the most accomplished of two best Coastal pitchers. He is a 2017 preseason All-American (1st team with Collegiate Baseball and 2nd team with perfect game), he came into this season with a career 2.12 ERA, and he picked up a bevy of awards last year (breakout player of the year, Big South's overall male athlete of the year, Big South pitcher of the year, named the most outstanding player of the college world series, was named to 3 separate All-American teams, and more). His 15 wins last year also led the NCAA. Despite all his accomplishments, his stats have been significantly down this year. He is 0-1 on the season with a 7.84 ERA coming into this series. In 20.2 innings through 3 starts and 2 relief appearances he has struck out 25 and only walked 6, but he's allowing opponents to hit .341 against him.

Sophomore Jason Bilous will take the mound for the finale on Sunday. Bilous was drafted by the Dodgers coming out of high school despite not playing his entire senior year after having Tommy John surgery. He decided to head to Coastal instead and started 10 games last year as a Freshman for the Chants. D1baseball named him the Big South freshman pitcher of the year and tabbed him the 12th best freshman in the nation last year. Bilous is 2-0 on the season this year through 4 starts with a complete game to his name already. He has a 4.29 ERA through 21 innings pitched with 29 strikeouts and 13 walks. Opponents are hitting .216 off Bilous.

Relievers to watch for Coastal:
Austin Kitchen. 7 appearances, 2 saves. 0.87 ERA.
Will Latchum. 0.00 ERA still through 4.2 innings and 3 apperances. .133 opponents BA.
Bobby Holmes. One of the heroes in the CWS. Not great stats this year though, 1-2 record and 4.26 ERA.

Coastal offense:
As a team the Chanticleers are hitting just .254 on the season (compared to .300 for TXST), they have hit 25 homers already however (compared to 14 for TXST). They have a .441 slugging percentage, which is pretty damn high for a team only hitting .254.

Center Fielder Billy Cooke is leading the team with a .340 batting average. In 53 ABs he has 18 hits, 3 doubles, 3 HRs, and 10 RBIs. He's slugging .566 and is a perfect 9/9 on stolen base attempts.
Catcher Peyton Isaacson is the only other player on the roster batting over .300 at .313.
1st baseman Kevin Woodall Jr. leads the nation with 9 homers already.

This will be the first ever meeting between the schools. Saturday's game will be televised on the Spectrum Sports Channel for those who have Spectrum (TWC) Cable. First pitch for Friday is 6pm, 4:05 on Saturday, and 1pm on Sunday. Don't forget the basketball team will be in Strahan on 5pm on Sunday also taking on Idaho in the 2nd round of the CIT.

That's a vicious pitching matchup for our hitters. Expect quite a few scouts on hand both days. There was one there on Wednesday, but couldn't tell if he was scouting Texas State or Rice specifically.

Newman walks us off with a solo HR in the bottom of the 14th and TXST wins the series opener 5-4.

Thrilling game to watch. Despite being 5 hours long.

Lost 4-3 in game 2.

Both teams played well. Engle and the bullpen pitched well. Only difference in the game is their long ball bounced off the top of the wall and went over and we had 3-4 deep shots that just stayed in park.

We hit the ball hard all game. Definitely not over matched at the plate.

Considering that was their All American pitcher on the mound, says a lot about our hitting the rest of the season.

Post Re: Series Thread - Vs. #20 Coastal Carolina
Went to my first bobcat baseball game in almost 5 years today, and took my 4 yr old to his first TxSt baseball game. Fun game. I've been following the forum and was bummed to see the struggles the team has had this season, but when I heard how they fared against the defending national champs the past two days, I thought this would be a great way to cap off our spring break and so we made the trek down from Cedar Park. I have to say, these Bobcats looked good, unlike what I had read about in the first 5-8 games.

Only negative is about the gameday experience. Got to do more to keep things lively during the down times, and what the hell is up with the speakers? Sounds like they are all broken save one, and those things up there looked like they have been around for a while. Beer at the ballpark was good though! :baseball: :cat:

Starting pitching was pretty good all weekend. Only poor relief outing I can recall was Bosse on Sunday. Pitching was solid overall.

Hitting was even better than you see on paper. We hit the ball on the screws multiple times Saturday either right at people or to the deepest part of the park. Newman was hitting 390 foot flyouts to the power alleys all weekend.

Looks like we're finally figuring out the starting rotation and who we can rely on out of the bullpen. I wish we had a better grasp on it early in the season but very happy to see things start to click some.

Defense has been significantly better since Sherley's return.

Overall, a really good weekend for the club. Best of the season so far probably.

UT in San Marcos Tuesday night now.

The 7th inning seems to be our inning. Friday night 3 runs to tie. Sunday 5 runs (all after two outs) to take the lead.
