Post Game Thread - Vs. UTSA
Game 5 of the 13 game home stand is Tuesday at 6pm vs UTSA.

Probable Pitching Matchup:
RHP Brandon Courville (0-0, 5.19 ERA) vs. Karan Patel (0-1, 7.59 ERA)

Courville is getting his first start of the season after 2 relief appearances. He'll become the 7th pitcher on the roster to get a start after tonight as Ty and Fikac are obviously still working on figuring out the rotation. Courville pitched 3.2 innings in game 2 of the Purdue series giving up 3 ER on 3 hits. He hasn't pitched since February 24th when he threw 101 pitches in a 5 inning relief appearance at Oklahoma State giving up 2 runs on 3 hits. Overall he has thrown 8.2 innings and has given up 5 ER on 6 hits with 10 strikeouts and 6 walks. Opponents are batting .182 vs. Courville.

Patel will get the ball for UTSA in his 4th start of the season. Unlike TXST, the roadrunners have stuck to a 4-man rotation all season so far, though they've moved their 4 starters to different spots within the rotation. Patel made his last start just 4 days ago on Friday vs. Utah. It's rare to see a college pitcher make two starts in the same week like this especially this early in the season. Patel was roughed up pretty good in that outing however, only throwing 55 pitches over 2 innings. On UTSA's opening weekend vs. Quinnipiac, Patel pitched the 3rd game of the series getting a no decision in a loss. He gave up 3 runs on 5 hits in 6 innings in that outing and was moved to the #1 spot in the rotation for the last two weekends. Two weekends ago vs. SFA he got another no decision in a win before getting a loss vs. Utah on Friday last week. On the season he has pitched 10.2 innings, giving up 9 ER on 11 hits, striking out 8 and walking 11.

One note on TXST relief pitching. It looks like Blake Walden is your 2017 closer. The JUCO transfer got his first save opportunity this weekend against Richmond but wasn't able to get it thanks to two Bobcat errors allowing a run to score to tie the game in the 9th and send it to extras. The Bobcats still don't have a save on the season through 12 games. Walden is a righty with a fastball that only tops out at around 87. His changeup is supposedly pretty nasty though and what got him the job.

It looks like the top of the Bobcats lineup could be pretty lethal this year with 5 guys that look like they could have huge years. Obviously Ortega is at the top of the list. He's batting a ridiculous .471 through 12 games with 4 doubles and 2 homers. Teddy Hoffman is also raking so far. Hoffman is one guy on the roster that seems to have bulked some in the offseason as his power looks up at the plate and he's developed an absolute cannon in RF. Hoffman's batting .396 with 6 doubles and 3 homers. He's slugging .717. Scheible and Paul have been solid at the plate all year and Newman had a great weekend against Richmond after a sub-par performance in the Purdue series. I feel pretty good about the lineup with those guys. If we can get a few more big contributors (Sanders and Benton maybe) we may have a decent lineup on our hands this year.

UTSA always seems to be an offensive team with so-so pitching and it looks like that may be the case again this year. CF Kevin Markham is leading the team offensively hitting .447 and slugging .766. He has 8 doubles, 2 triples, and 1 homer on the season. Leadoff guy and RF Jesse Baker is hitting .353 and has 3 homers on the season. DH Trent Bowles is also hitting .353, C/1B Tony Beam is hitting .321, and 3rd baseman Chris Estrada is hitting .316. Like the bobcats, the top of their lineup looks pretty dangerous as well.

The best ERA on UTSA's roster currently? That would belong to Tyler Giovanoni. You may remember Giovanoni as he played his freshman season at Texas State. On the season, Giovanoni has a 1.13 ERA in 8 innings pitched over 4 appearances, allowing a .200 batting average.

First pitch is at 6pm at Bobcat Ballpark.

Well, our SP didn't fool anyone. Most every ball was hit on the nose by utsa. He also had two blunders in the field that didn't show in the score book. We couldn't get a ht with runners in scoring position to save our lives. Our defense does look better with our SS back and O at 2B.
The official score keeper at Bobcat needs a refresher on the difference in a hit and an error.

Giving up 15 hits never makes for good results. UTSA was taking big swings as pitches were left up in the zone most of the game. As was posted earlier, Tyler Giovanoni has the best era for UTSA in 8 innings pitched. Looks like he has been doing a solid job coming out of the pen. He left the Tx St program after his freshman season. Also noticed that Montana Parsons was on the Baylor roster. I believe he is the Saturday starter for the Bears. He also left the TX St program after his freshman season.

I'm sure things will be better this weekend with another cupcake coming into town for a three game series, but the Cats better tighten up their jocks for the next couple of weeks.

Ugly game all around. Maybe I jinxed the bats with my first post. Terrible night offensively.

Courville didn't have a good game and it looks like we'll continue to search for a 4th starter. Mid-week games have been ugly this year so far.

Lots of boneheaded defensive mistakes as was noted earlier. Twice we let utsa score with a runner at 3rd on ground balls in the infield as we couldn't successfully look the runner back. Outfielders missed their cutoff man a few times. Scheible has to make that play in center that was scored a triple with a throwing error.

Just an awful all-around game for TXST. Anything less than a sweep of Alabama A&M this weekend is probably a disappointing result.

Wonder why these two guys, Tyler Giovanoni and Montana Parsons, left the program?

Lost by a combined score of 13-1 to their new schools so I'll guess they left for better programs

Noticed Giovanoni started against Texas Tech last Saturday and pitched 6.1 innings and gave up two runs on two hits. UTSA got the win, 3-2. I'm sure he could have helped the Cats this season. Wonder why he left???

Parsons is Baylor's #2 starter and now Giovanoni is UTSA's #2.

And we've been struggling with starting pitching all season. Keeping those guys would have been nice.
