Post Series Thread - Vs. Richmond
The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th scheduled games of TXST's current 13 game home stand are set for this weekend as the Richmond Spiders visit Bobcat Ballpark for a 3 game series.

Schedule/Probable Pitching Matchups:
Friday - 6pm
LHP Anthony Pagano (0-1, 15.43 ERA) vs. RHP Layne Looney (1-0, 2.35 ERA)
Saturday - 4pm
LHP Wes Engle (1-0, 6.00 ERA) vs. LHP Jacob Lamb (1-0, 3.00 ERA)
Sunday - 1pm
RHP Nicholas Fraze (0-1, 13.50 ERA) vs. RHP Robbie Baker (0-2, 8.00 ERA)

Texas State is rolling out the same weekend rotation they rolled out last weekend at Oklahoma State. Pagano will get his 2nd start while Engle and Fraze will both get their 3rd.

Richmond Outlook:
Richmond is currently 3-4 on the young season. They went 1-2 to start the season in the Caravelle Resort Battle for the Beach Tournament hosted by Sun Belt team Coastal Carolina. They beat North Carolina A&T and lost to Coastal Carolina and St. Johns in that tournament. They then beat Longwood in their home opener, split two games with Toledo, and lost to Binghamton in their last game on Sunday. Their mid-week game at James Madison was rained out.

The Spiders baseball program was in the news this week when it was reported they've had 5 players suspended for every game so far this season by the NCAA. Their crime? Playing fantasy football....
Here's the ESPN story: http://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/18791610/richmond-spiders-baseball-players-suspended-playing-fantasy-football

Last season Richmond went 28-24 overall and 11-13 in the Atlantic 10 conference, good for a tie for 8th in the 13 team league. Richmond did not play in the A-10 tournament last year as only the top 7 teams in the regular season are invited.

Starting Pitching:
Friday's matchup pits TXST's Anthony Pagano vs. Richmond's Layne Looney. Pagano will be making his 2nd start of the season after losing to Oklahoma State in Stillwater last Friday night. This will be Pagano's 3rd appearance as he came out of the bullpen once in the Purdue series. In a pretty telling indictment of our starting pitching up to this point of the season, we are rolling out a guy with a 15.43 ERA and a .400 opponent's BA for his 2nd straight Friday night start. In 4.2 innings pitched this year, Pagano has given up 8 runs (all earned) on 8 hits with 4 walks and 3 strikeouts. Half of the 8 hits he has given up have gone for extra bases.

Looney's stats for Richmond are a tad better. He's 1-0 in two starts with a 2.35 ERA in 7.2 innings pitched. Opponents are batting .259 vs. Looney and he's walked 6 and struck out 8. He beat North Carolina A&T in Richmond's 2nd game of the season before only lasting 1.2 innings in a no decision vs. Toledo last weekend.

Saturday has Wes Engle for TXST taking on Jacob Lamb of Richmond. Engle has been the best of TXST's starters up to this point of the season, though that's not saying much. Engle is 1-0 on the season with a 6.00 ERA in 9 innings pitched. Opponents hit .276 off Engle and he's walked 7 and struck out 7. Engle earned a win in his first start of the season against Purdue before getting a no decision in a win vs. Oklahoma State on Saturday. Jacob Lamb is 1-0 for Richmond on the season. Lamb has been a reliever all season and this will be his first start of the season. He has 3 appearances and picked up a win against Toledo on Saturday last week. He's pitched 9 innings and opponents are hitting a paltry .138 off Lamb. He's walked 8 and struck out 11.

In the finale on Sunday we'll see freshman Nicholas Fraze get his 3rd start of the season against Robbie Baker for Richmond. Fraze's stats are down there at the bottom of the stat sheet with Pagano through 2 starts. He's 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA in 4.2 innings pitched. That's right folks. 4.2 innings pitched through 2 starts. He's given up 11 earned runs and opponents are batting .333 against Fraze. Baker will get the ball for Richmond to make his 3rd start of the year. Baker was the opening day starter for Richmond and was the Friday night starter last week also before getting demoted to Sunday this weekend. Baker took the loss in both of his previous starts and has an 8.00 ERA through 9 innings pitched. Opponents are batting .325 vs. Baker. He does have a great strike out to walk ratio with 12 strikeouts and just a single walk given up.

Relief Pitching:
The top 4 arms out of the Bobcat's bullpen so far have been Joe Powell, Blake Walden, Zachary Leigh, and Shane Daughtey. Nobody on the roster has earned a save yet, though it looks like we are leaning towards giving the ball to Walden late in games. That would continue Ty and Fikac's tradition of soft throwing righty closers we've loved to use in the past (Lemke, Whitter). I haven't seen Walden break 85 yet in the games I've been at.

For Richmond, Daniel Brumbaugh still has a 0.00 ERA in 3 innings pitched over 3 appearances. Opponents are only hitting .100 against Brumbaugh. Jonathan DeMarte has the only save on the team, though he's only pitched 1 inning in 1 appearance to earn it. Peter Bovenzi has 3 appearances and opponents only hit .143 against him. Opponents hit .145 against Tim Miller. It looks like the Spiders have a decent number of arms in their bullpen.

Hitting:
TXST has 1 guy hitting over .400 with Ortega hitting .405 on the season. 4 other guys are above .300 in Paul, Scheible, Hoffman, and Almendarez.

Daniel Brumbaugh has both the best batting average and the best ERA for the Spiders as Brumbaugh is hitting .462 on the season and is slugging .692. In 26 ABs he's already tallied 4 doubles and a triple. It looks like Brumbaugh plays all over the field as he pitches, and plays both RF and 2B. Their 2nd best hitter is also a 2-way player in Jonathan DeMarte. DeMarte is batting .400 and has a .531 OBP. DeMarte is the every day 3rd baseman and is also an option to pitch. SS Vinny Capra hit .381 over the Spiders first 5 games but has not played in the last two games. I'm not sure if he's injured or if he's available to play this weekend. Two other guys are hitting over .300 on the season in DH/LF/1B Caleb Ward and CF DJ Lee.

This will be the first meeting between these teams ever. Hopefully we can begin to get on track. Not sure if to expect any of our 4 injured players back from injury.

That's the most depressing series thread x has penned. Well written but still depressing but it's getting hard to slap another coat of paint on this turd.

This little stretch against weak ass teams like Richmond, UTSA and Alabama A&M may be our only chance to scare .500 this season.

I was reading and cringing (not because of you "X") at the starting lineup for the pitchers. We need Shirley back big time.

Nice to see us play fairly well for a change. Having Sherley and Newman back is big. Also infielder Ethan Klosterboer played in the 9th inning. His left hand is wrapped up pretty good so I'm not sure if he's able to hit yet, but he can apparently play in the field if absolutely needed.

Pagano had a decent game and we finally got a quality start out of a starter. Pagano pitched 6 innings, gave up one earned run on 3 hits, struck out 6, and only walked one. Pretty good outing for him.

Two errors. One on the first ball hit to Sherley on the season and one on Klosterboer in the 9th when we were already up 15.

Offense erupted. Ortega went 5/6 with 7 RBI. Scheible went 3/5. Ortega, Scheible, and Hoffman all went deep.

High chance of rain today. Not sure they'll be able to get today's game in.

what's the scoop on this Klosterboer? I checked on out our roster for his size, high school, and the KSU thing. I happened to walk by him a couple of games back. He certainly passes the eyeball test. He has some size that could help us out. Were would he play?

Game two:
Ortega hits a 3 run homer in the 8th to make it 5-4 bobcats.

Then after a clean 8 innings we commit two errors in the top of the 9th to let Richmond tie it at 5. 5-5 bottom 9th.

Ortega had an error in the 2nd or 3rd inning the batter before Richmond hit a 3-run homer. The official scorer scored it a hit but it was clearly an error. All 3 of those run should have been unearned. A very good pitching performance from Engle.

Good come back win. Exciting game.

And Harrington was going to SAC bunt with Ortega in the 8th inning. Thankfully he missed the bunt attempt and Harrington let him swing away for a 3 run homer. He was going to SAC bunt with a guy hitting .460. Dumbass
