Post Series Thread - @ UT-Arlington
It's rivalry week in the Sun Belt and the Bobcats play their final 3 games of the regular season in a Thursday-Friday-Saturday series in Arlington vs. the UTA Mavs.

Both the Bobcats and Mavs have clinched a spot in next week's conference tournament at Bobcat Ballpark, but this will be an important series for seeding as both teams are locked in a 3-way tie for 5th place in the league standings at 14-13. Georgia Southern is the 3rd team involved in the tie for 5th. With just 5 games separating 3rd place through 8th place in the current standings, the Bobcats could get seeded as high as 3rd with a sweep and as low as 8th if they get swept so these games will be pivotal to earn the best possible matchups in next weeks tourney. Winning the conference tournament will be TXST's only hope of reaching the NCAA tournament as the Bobcats don't have an RPI that would warrant at-large consideration.

Series Info: Texas State (28-25 [14-13]) at UT Arlington (28-24 [14-13])
Site: Clay Gould Ballpark – Arlington, Texas
Dates: Thursday, May 19 – Saturday, May 21
Time: Thursday – 6:30 p.m. | Friday – 6:30 p.m. | Saturday – 2 p.m.

Probable Pitching Matchups:
Thursday: #21 RHP Lucas Humpal (6-5, 2.89 ERA) vs. #12 RHP Kadon Simmons (9-4, 3.10 ERA)
Friday: TBA vs. #45 RHP Joel Kuhnel (5-3, 2.73 ERA)
Saturday: TBA vs. #11 LHP Jake Wilcox (4-4, 5.80 ERA)

Some recent injuries to the Bobcats' weekend rotation leave us with two TBA's scheduled for Friday and Saturday. Cory Geisler returned last weekend at Arkansas State after missing the previous weekend with a re-aggravated shoulder and Jonathan Hennigan was scratched from his scheduled start last weekend with reported muscle spasms.

My guess is Geisler will start Friday assuming he's still good to go and we will see either Hennigan or Hallonquist on Saturday depending on Hennigan's health. Another thing to keep in mind is the conference tournament starts on Wednesday next week and everyone plays on day 1. TXST has to win the tournament to keep their season alive, so TXST's strategies could change depending on how this weekend's games play out. For instance, if TXST's seeding looks to be set after Friday night's game you could see TXST make some adjustments to start resting some guys for the tournament and maybe pitch with a similar strategy as we saw against Texas on Tuesday night.

Some interesting series going on throughout league play:
#1 South Alabama is at #4 Troy. We can pass Troy as they are only 1 game ahead of us in the standings and USA is out of reach so we should be pulling for the Jaguars to win this series.
#9 ULM is at #2 ULL. ULL is out of our reach and ULM can't catch us so this series has no impact on us. ULM needs to make up two games on Arkansas State to even make the tournament so they are in bad shape.
#8 Arkansas State is at #3 Little Rock. We can technically catch Little Rock but we have to sweep UTA and they need to get swept by stAte so it's extremely unlikely we can get to any higher than the 4th seed. Similarly Arkansas State can technically catch us, but they would have to sweep Little Rock and we would have to get swept by UTA so it's also extremely unlikely we finish any worse than 7th.
#10 Georgia State is at #5 Georgia Southern. This is a pivotal series as we are tied with Georgia Southern. So we need to pull for Georgia State. Georgia State needs to make up two games on both Arkansas State and ULM to even make the tournament so they should be playing with desperation. At least in game 1. If they lose the first game of the series they could be eliminated already if either Arkansas State or ULM win.

#11 App St is already eliminated, so it's fitting they are the team playing non-conference this weekend as they host Longwood playing for nothing but pride.

just want to thank you again for all these write ups each week. you're literally the only "media" coverage for baseball (and basketball too, for that matter).

No problem.

My level of detail wasn't near as high in the 2nd half of the season. I'll try to do a pretty thorough write-up for the conference tourney next week.

Lengthy delay as Teddy Hoffman was taken off the field in the bottom of the 1st by stretcher and has been transported by ambulance to the hospital after a crash into the RF wall.

Score is 2-1 UTA through 1 inning. Let's hope everything is OK with Hoffman.

Yeah, I also appreciate your posts on Bobcats baseball. Baseball isn't one of the sports I know much about, but I like to keep up with the Bobcats. Thanks for making that easier.

For those worried about @Teddy_Hoffman29 who suffered an injury earlier in the game, he's been X-Rayed and there are no fractures. He's good

B8: @cory_geisler ends the inning with another K, his fifth of the day. Studdard, Lovejoy and Newman will try to get the run back, down 3-2

Extras probably the last thing these teams want with the tournament starting Wednesday.

Humpal pulled after 4 innings and only 67 pitches, Geisler pitched the next 4 innings. Hodson in for the 9th.

Likely going to see Hennigan and Hallonquist the next two games and both may be on a short pitch count.

Hodson sits UTA down in order in the 9th. Going to the 10th tied at 3.

Both teams go 1-2-3 in the 10th.

To the 11th. FYI bobcats are 1-5 in extra inning games this season.

UTA right fielder makes a great sliding catch near the warning track to rob Studdard of an extra base hit.

Nothing for the bobcats in the top of the 11th. Hodson back on for the bottom of the inning.

Hodson gives up a one-out single but nothing else. Going to the 12th tied at 3. Scheible, Sherley, Perez due up for the cats.

Scheible leads off the 12th with a 5-pitch walk. Sherley bunts him to 2nd for Perez.
Perez grounds out to 3rd. Scheible can't advance. 2 outs now for Mickey Scott. Scott comes through with a 2-out single to score Scheible! 4-3 Cats. Ortega grounds out to end the top half of the inning. Bobcats will try to lose it out with a 1 run cushion.

Bobcats closer Mazzoccoli in to try and extend his single season saves record.

Leadoff basehit puts a runner at first for UTA.
Maz Ks the next batter for the first out.
Another K for Maz, one more to go.
Walk puts the tying run at 2nd for UTAs dangerous lead off man, McLean.
Popup to shallow center ends it. Bobcats win 4-3!

Back in a minute with some results from today and some seeding scenarios.

Post Re: Series Thread - @ UT-Arlington
Today's Scores:
Little Rock 9, Arkansas State 4
South Alabama 8, Troy 3 (10 innings)
Georgia State/Georgia Southern was rained out, they will play a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 9am CST
ULL/ULM was suspended in the top of the 5th with ULM leading 1-0. They will resume play tomorrow then play game 2 after the completion of game 1.

Little Rock's win over Arkansas State means Texas State cannot catch Little Rock for the 3 seed, the best the Bobcats can finish now is 4th. Our win today also ensures we finish no worse than 7th, so we will not be the 8th seed even if we lose out.

Because Georgia Southern's game was rained out they were not able to keep up with us in the standings and we are alone in 5th for the moment with a 1/2 game lead on 6th place Georgia Southern and a 1 game lead on UTA. Troy's loss to USA actually ties us for 4th with Troy, but they hold the tiebreaker over us. If we win tomorrow and Troy loses tomorrow we can move into 4th alone unless Georgia Southern sweeps their doubleheader with Georgia State.

So we should be Jaguar fans and Panther fans tomorrow as well as Bobcat fans.

South Alabama's extra inning win over Troy puts them a game away from the regular season conference championship. They can clinch tomorrow with either a win over Troy or a ULM win over ULL. Barring a miracle, congrats to the Jaguars on the championship.

I have been bitching about the RP and situational baseball all year.
1) Great RP for last two games!
2) Twice we executed situational baseball for two runs. Won the game on the last one.
I love me some crow. 8)
I hope to enjoy some crow pie for the next nine days.
