Post Game Thread - @ UTRGV
Game Info: Texas State (15-5) at UT Rio Grande Valley (9-10)
Site: Edinburg Baseball Stadium – Edinburg, Texas
Date: Tuesday, March 22
Time: 6 p.m.

Probable Pitching Matchup
#34 LHP Jonathan Hennigan (2-0, 4.08) vs. #41 RHP Robert Quinonez (0-0, 6.35)

Road game tonight in Edinburg against the school formally known as UTPA.

Hennigan will get the start after getting bumped out of the weekend rotation this past weekend by Cory Geisler. Freshman Brandon Lewis had been the mid-week starter up to this point. Both Hennigan and Lewis have been struggling lately. I wouldn't be surprised to see Lewis take over for Hennigan if Hennigan struggles tonight, Hennigan has had some serious control issues lately.

UTRGV is 9-10 on the season, but just 6-10 vs. D1 teams. They were swept by ACU in Abilene in a 4-game series to start the year then went 3-1 in a tournament in Edinburg. They beat Washington State and beat Prairie View twice in the tournament but lost to Houston Baptist. After the tournament they got blown out at TCU before going to Lamar and dropping 2 of 3. They then swept non-D1 Arlington Baptist before losing both games in a 2-game series vs. TAMU-CC. This past weekend they hosted Jackson State and won both games played. Series was scheduled for 3 games but one was rained out. Per Warren Nolan they have an approximate RPI of 234th. Last year they were 21-30-1 overall and 6-20-1 in the WAC, finishing in last place.

Getting his first start of the season tonight for the Vaqueros is Robert Quinonez. Quinonez has made 3 relief appearances this year and owns a 6.35 ERA in 5.2 innings pitched. He has given up 7 hits and 7 runs (only 4 earned) with 6 strikeouts and 5 walks and allows an opponent's BA of .280. As a staff they have a fairly solid ERA at 3.85. Opponents bat .278 against them.

Offensively they hit .270 as a team and have 3 guys batting over .300. Catcher Jose Garcia leads the team with a .400 batting average with 22 hits, 4 doubles, 1 triple, and 10 RBIs in 55 ABs. 2B Joseph Collazo is batting .373 in 67 ABs with 22 runs scored, 25 hits, 3 doubles, 2 homers, and 10 RBI. RF/3B/DH Jacob Huckabay also bats over .300 at .309 with 17 hits and 13 RBI in 55 ABs. They don't seem to have a ton of pop as a team as they slug .343 with only 4 homers through 19 games.

How does a DII school have better quality video/production of games than we do? On top of that it's FREE! How is this possible?

It's a D1 school that plays in the WAC. They share their stadium with a minor league team. That probably enables them to use the same production equipment/teams.

Their play-by-play and color are 100x better than anything we put on the radio, not named Bill and Brant.

I think UTRGV are the sole tenants of this stadium now. It did use to house a minor league team that is no longer around.

So the university alone is responsible for this production.

2-0 Vaqueros in the top of the 6th by the way.

Hennigan done after 6.1 innings. He allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 7 hits. Struck out 3 with 1 walk. Considering his control issues his last couple starts I'd say a pretty good outing. Offense let him down today. Need to get something going now.

Brayden Theriot enters the game for Hennigan with a runner on 1st and 1 out in the bottom of the 6th. 2-0 UTRGV.

Double play ends it. 2-0 going to the 7th.

Geisler to pinch hit for Huber.

Geisler grounds out to the pitcher for first out.

Hubbard singles through the right side to bring up Ortega and the top of the lineup. Ortega is 2 for 4 today.

We seem to have a mid week game hitting block. Man this has been hard to watch.

Hoffman strikes out to end the inning, but Bobcats keep the game alive with 2 runs to tie it.

Heading to bottom of the 9th tied at 2. Mazzoccoli pitched the 8th and I would imagine will stick around for the 9th.

Over the course of the last 3 years we have to be one of the worst teams in the nation on mid-week road games. It's crazy how bad we've been.
