Post Coaching Change - Silva Leaving
Fro DI Baseball

• In other national assistant news, Texas State has a few changes coming down the pike as well. Per our Aaron Fitt, Bobcats assistant coach Mike Silva is leaving the program to pursue a professional scouting position, while head coach Ty Harrington will replace him with West Virginia assistant Steven Trout, who previously spent time in the program as a volunteer assistant before moving to Texarkana College and then to WVU.

Hate to even ask but does anyone know Harrington's condition? Doubt he will be at full strength but is he going to be back full time? The club sure did take a turn for the worse and would love to see him with a successful season.

This article is the most recent thing I've seen on Coach Harrington.

Talked to Ty recently, he says he feels really good and looking forward to the season. Doctors are happy with progress.
To me, his color was back and some weight had returned and handshake was strong. So I think he is on his way back--I really hope so.

Silva was the only decent coach on the team. Why would Ty bring an irrelevant coach in from West Virginia? Lots of good ties in Texas?

Edited because he went to TCU. Go figure. Not even a real pro player.

Silva was the hitting coach the past 4 seasons. How'd that go?
2009/2010 With Matlock but Fikac hitting instructor .334/.317 (2009 we had Goldschmidt)
2011 was the last year with Matlock but Fikac was hitting coach - .294
2012 with Silva .254
2013 Silva but Sibley graduate asst and helped hitting instruction - .284
2014 with Silva .248
2015 with Silva .257

I'm ok with Silva leaving. Maybe we need the new blood to re-energize the team.

I agree but it starts with Ty and Fikac. If u have lazy recruiting what do u expect? Silva didn't make the calls. How was the pitching? Any numbers?

I can get those numbers too but I already know that the pitching started to suffer after Matlock left. Fikac, for a MLB pitcher, is better as a hitting coach. It sounds bass ackwards but it's true.

I would have loved to have Sibley stay and latch onto the payroll but the kid got an MBA in accounting with a 4.0 GPA and is probably making more money than any of our paid assistants at this point.

Fikac was and is not our best recruiter, Matlock was. I know part of Matlock leaving was Ty not giving him leave and overriding his pitching decisions.

We're not getting rid of Ty or Fikac anytime soon (reference the football program) but, sometimes, an assistant can make a difference in just enough of a way to change things. Just watch the softball team the next few years if you don't think so.

I totally agree about Matlock. Too bad Silva was the sacrificial lamb

And I sincerely hope softball steps up. Bad stuff went down a few years ago

They got Cat Osterman and Kelly Kretschman (2X AA at Alabama and also an Olympian)
I see good things happening soon.

Just caught on Twitter that Silva is heading to UALR as an assistant.

.@CoachCurryLR has announced Mike Silva as the Trojans' newest assistant coach. http://lrtrjns.co/2aDpYp2

A friend of mine spotted Fikac and another person he assumed was from TXST last week scouting at a big select tournament in Lubbock. He didn't recognize the person with Fikac.
