Post Game Thread - Vs. Houston Baptist
Texas State is riding one of its best winning streaks and one of its best starts to a season in generations and is looking to further improve upon both marks Saturday afternoon in Strahan Coliseum vs. the Houston Baptist Huskies.

This is the 2nd leg of a home and home series with the Huskies as the teams played in Houston last year. Last year saw the Bobcats take a few embarrassing losses in non-conference play. The game at HBU was one of them as the Bobcats were run out of the gym, losing 71-52 to an eventual 6 win team. The Bobcats will look to avenge that embarrassing loss and split this series with the Huskies Saturday afternoon.

NET Rankings
In games played through Thursday, Texas State currently has an NET ranking of 93. This is down 7 spots from before the game at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday when the Bobcats were 86th.
Houston Baptist currently sits at 231st with a 2-4 record.

TXST News
Easily the biggest takeaway of the game vs. the Islanders on Wednesday was the emergence of redshirt freshman center Alonzo Sule. Sule had 22 points and 5 rebounds off the bench and kept TXST in a game in which its guards struggled badly from the perimeter all game long to help lead the Bobcats to a road win.

Sule started the year 3rd on the depth chart behind starter Eric Terry and backup Chandler Davis. Sule seemed poised to be the primary backup to Terry, but persistent nagging injuries kept Sule out of enough practices for Davis to claim the spot. Through 9 games Sule seems likely to move into the primary backup spot behind Terry and may even be in position to challenge Terry for the starting job. Despite no foul trouble, Terry only played 12 minutes Wednesday as Sule played the majority of the 2nd half and ended the game with 26 minutes. Davis only logged 2 minutes (and managed to miss a breakaway layup during that time).

Andy Katz released his first NCAA Tournament projections this week and has Texas State as a 13 seed in the East Regional. Interestingly, he has the Texas Longhorns as the 4 seed in that region paired up with the Bobcats in the first round.

Texas State was receiving 3 votes in the College Insider Mid-Major Poll. A win vs. HBU should yield more votes for the Bobcats if they can finish off a 2-0 week (poll released on Mondays). Texas A&M-Corpus head coach Willis Wilson is a voter in the poll and will hopefully throw us some love after beating his team on Wednesday.

Scouting HBU
Houston Baptist is currently 2-4 on the season, but has likely played the toughest schedule of any opponent we've faced this year. They opened the season with a loss to Arizona before beating a 6-2 Fordham team in their home opener to even their record at 1-1. They then lost at #12 Wisconsin before getting an ACC road win at Wake Forest to again even their record at 2-2. Since then they've lost to UTSA in Houston 86-82 and at Louisiana Tech 85-78.

The Huskies had a rough year last year going just 6-25 (after winning 17 games in '16-'17). They were just 2-16 in Southland Conference games, finishing 12th in the 13 league conference. They failed to qualify for the SLC tournament and ended their season with a 5 point loss at home to, coincidentally, TXST's most recent opponent in A&M-Corpus. They are expected to improve this year as they were picked to finish in a tie for 10th with Nicholls in the preseason poll.

The main reason HBU was able to win by 19 in this matchup last year was due to dominant post play from the Huskies and Immanuel King/Eric Terry getting dominated in the paint. HBU out-rebounded TXST 39-28 in the game. That's the bad news. The good news? Starting center and 2nd team preseason all-Southland 6-11 senior Josh Ibarra has been out all season with a leg injury. Ibarra had a double-double in this game last year with 14 points and a ridiculous 17 rebounds. The bobcats won't have to worry about Ibarra in this year's game.

They will, however, still have to worry about being at a size disadvantage in the paint. 6-10 senior center Edward Hardt has filled in nicely in Ibarra's absence and is putting up 10.5 ppg and has started all 6 games for the Huskies. On top of Hardt, HBU have two additional 6-8 guys in the rotation at center as well. This is a pretty good sized team and their size is the primary reason they were able to beat the Bobcats last year. Terry/Sule/Chandler will have to work hard to stay out of foul trouble and work even harder to keep HBU off the glass like they were a year ago. This game is another big opportunity for Sule as he's seemed to be the best rebounder out of the 3, despite being the smallest. At just 6-7 Sule will have his hands full with the 6-10 Hardt.

The primary scorer for this team is 6-4 sophomore guard Ian DuBose. Dubose has a team high 16.5 ppg playing nearly 31 mpg. Dubose is a driving guard that looks to score in the paint or kick to his teammates. While not a volume shooter from the perimeter he's been very efficient hitting 12 of 21 3s taken this year. He can be a bit turnover prone as he's turned it over 15 times through the first 6 games. Hopefully that's something the Bobcat D can exploit. The main 3-point threat comes off the bench and is the team's 2nd leading scorer. 6-0 Junior G Jalon Gates (from Schertz Clemens) is only playing 17.7 mpg but takes 82.4% of his shots from 3 where he's shooting 31%. That's not a great %. Unlike DuBose, Gates certainly is a volume shooter. Gates is putting up 11 ppg.

Odds/Time/TV
TXST opened as a huge favorite in this game as the line opened at TXST -12. It's since moved to -12.5. Very high O/U posted for this game at 146. O/U is almost never that high for TXST games and is a bit odd to me considering HBU isn't a really high scoring team or anything (71.75 ppg). Bet the under.

Tip-off is set for 4pm in Strahan.

Like all TXST home games this year, the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.

This game scares me quite a bit. Their size advantage will play a huge factor and we tend to try and be too aggressive with teams like this, and those two guards carry a good 1-2 punch beyond the arc. That line is way way over. At most, it should be at 4-5, not 12.5 like it is right now.

I was expecting like 7-8. Was surprised to see it drop at 12 also. I may put a buck or two down on HBU actually. That usually results in a TXST blowout so it's a win-win for me.

All TXST since the last media timeout. 15-8 Bobcats.

Sule leading the way with 5 off the bench. Getting excited about this kid.

Terry hasn't re-entered the game yet after playing just the first 3 minutes.

Sule leading TXST off the bench with 15 and 5 rebounds. On pace for a double double.
Pearson has 6.

DuBose has 8 and Hardt has 7 for HBU.

Kaspar has to burn an early timeout.

46-39 HBU early into the 2nd half. Huskies with all the momentum.

DuBose has 8 already in the 2nd half in under 4 minutes.

54-45 Bobcats at the U12 media timeout.

Sule scoreless so far in the 2nd half. Pearson up to 11.
Nottingham finally hits a 3 after missing 15 straight over the last few games.

DuBose has 18 for HBU to lead all scorers. Need to stop him and force someone else to try and beat us.
