Post Game Thread - @ Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
Texas State is looking to further improve upon its good start to the season on the road tonight in Corpus taking on the Islanders. The Bobcats are 7-1, which is the programs best start since 1980.

NET Rankings
The Bobcats are up to 86th in the country in this mornings release of the NET rankings. They were at 101 entering the UTSA game.
The Islanders enter the game with an NET ranking of 217.

TXST News
Nijal Pearson is absolutely on fire to start the season. The junior has moved up to 12th all time in program history with 1,152 points. He has scored 25+ in three games straight. He hit the game tying three with 13 seconds left Saturday at UTSA to put TXST in position to win late. Over the last 5 games he's scoring 24.8 PPG on 46 of 83 shooting (55.4%) and 24 of 40 shooting from three (60%). For his performance last week he was named the Lou Henson Player of the Week (best mid-major player in the country) and has been named Sun Belt Conference player of the week in back-to-back weeks. That's the first time since 2012 someone has won the award in back-to-back weeks.

Not exactly a huge accomplishment, but TXST is receiving votes in the College Insider Mid-Major Top 25. It's the first time the Bobcats have ever received votes in the poll since it began 20 years ago.
Here's the poll:

Scouting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
This is the 2nd of a home and home series with the Islanders and the 4th straight season the teams have met. The Bobcats won last year's meeting in San Marcos, 66-53. The Islanders have won 2 of the last 3 meetings however, sweeping the series in 2015 and 2016.

The Islanders are 4-4 on the season, but just 1-4 against D1 competition. They started the season with back-to-back non-D1 home wins vs. Howard Payne and Our Lady of the Lake before losing to UTRGV at home. They then got their lone D1 win vs. Sun Belt member UTA before losing to UC Davis. They got another non-D1 win vs. St. Mary's before losing to UTRGV again and #6 Tennessee. (At least the Sun Belt limits non-D1 games to two. We complain about that, but wasn't that long ago we were scheduling 4 in the Southland like most teams there still do apparently. Corpus plays Huston-Tillotson in a couple weeks also).

The Islanders went 11-18 last year, 8-10 in the Southland, losing in the first round of the SLC tournament to New Orleans. Their 8-10 record put them in a 3-way tie for 8th in the 13 team Southland. They were picked to finish 9th in the preseason poll this year.

Corpus has just one player scoring in double digits this year in 6-0 So. G Myles Smith. Smith broke into the starting lineup late in the season last year as a freshman and finished the season 4th on the team in scoring with 7.8 PPG. He's putting up 13.1 PPG so far this season. Smith is the biggest three-point threat on a team that isn't a huge 3-point shooting team (Islanders making just 30.2% of their attempts from 3 on 162 shots, Bobcats making 37.9% on 174 shots in comparison). Last year's leading scorer, Joseph Kilgore (18.6 PPG), is gone but the 2nd leading scorer returns and is currently 2nd on the team again in 6-2 Jr. G Kareem South. South is scoring 9.9 PPG after putting up 11.4 PPG a year ago. Despite being 6-2 he's the team's leading rebounder also at 5.8 RPG. Their big man is a 6-10 transfer from Blinn Tony Lewis. Lewis is averaging 9 PPG and 5.4 RPG in 3 starts this year. Lewis looks like a very pedestrian shooter (41.3% from the field, 8.3% from 3, 50% from FT) but will have a 2 inch advantage on Eric Terry or Chandler Davis in the paint.

How to Watch
Game will be on Eleven Sports, which is carried by Direct TV, AT&T, and Verizon Fios. For those of us without one of those 3 carriers I think you should be able to live stream the broadcast here:

Tip-off is set for 7pm. Vegas currently has the Bobcats as 7.5 point favorites.

Excellent preview as always! I never really post on here much anymore (football forum got hijacked by trolls insulting each other), and I am not sure I have ever posted on the basketball forum (don't know enough about the sport to have much of an opinion) but it is good to see us start the season off right in basketball. I know A&M CC has given us fits in the past, so I hope we can beat them twice in a row...

Nottingham playing smart and patient, he has two really sweet assists in the paint whereas in past games he would have forced a bad shot or hurried layup. Bobcats lead 11-7. :-||

Having another cold shooting first half like at UTSA Saturday.

Bobcats just 5 of 16 from the floor and 0 for 8 from three.

14-13 Islanders.

Other big negative so far is rebounding.

Getting outrebounded 18-13 and have given up 7 offensive rebounds.

20-17 Corpus. 3:51 to halftime.

Was gonna bet the under till I saw it was the lowest O/U of any game in the country tonight. Should've done it anyway....

24-24 at halftime.

TXST just 8/23 from the floor and, even worse, 0/9 from three.
Corpus not much better at 9/28 and 2/9.

Getting outrebounded 21-17 and 7-3 on the offensive glass.

Sule leading the way off the bench with 8 points on perfect 4/4 shooting.
Pearson with 5 but struggling. 2/6 from the floor and 0/2 from 3.

Jashawn Talton has 5 to lead Corpus.
Myles Smith is scoreless and 0/7 from the floor.

They are hurrying those shots instead of spotting up before tossing them up. I think Kaspar will coach on that in the locker room and settle them down.

He already has. We were 0/8 at the under 8 media timeout from 3. Came out of the timeout and you could see a concerted effort to get the ball into the interior. Only shot 2 more 3s the rest of the half.

Have to hit open shots though. Pearson, Nottingham, and Harrell all missed open 3s. Agree a few have been a bit rushed (though Pearson probably has the green light given how he's been shooting the past 2 weeks). Scott put up a rushed baseline jumper that I bet had Kaspar pulling his hair out.

You HAVE to hit those wide open 3's Nottingham..... :? :? :? :?

The other team doesn't even attempt to cover him at all anymore.

Harrell is developing nicely, he's leagues better than his first game at finding the open man and getting them the ball. :sign:

That turnover he had a minute ago was really, really bad. Assuming you said this before that.

Bobcats still ice cold but somehow leading 36-35 with 12 minutes to play.

13/35 from the floor and 0/13 from three. Ouch.

I did. It was an inside pass from the 3 where he had another pass on the outside but the lane was a better look.

Pearson on the inside and the FT line is keeping us in it.
