Last year we had a six game win streak right in the middle of conference, then dropped six very close ones the rest of the year. That is 12 games that we could have won in conference alone, which is why it was so heartbreaking to see that much potential fall short.

This year, the offense picked up right where it left off and the defense improved vastly (which is why the 8th pick in preseason polls is BS). The offense creates better shots on the outside and the guys are not afraid to attack the rim. More impressive though has been the defense. There have been very few blown assignments or guys out of position the first two games.

I, for one, I'm going to start making travel plans for the conference Tourney and possibly an NCAA Appearance. This team is very very good, and they have turned the proverbial corner.

When was the last time we hung almost 100 on any other team and beat them by almost 50? The more impressive game was the Air Force game, but small samples are enough to get a good feel of where a team is going. We also have A WHOLE SEASON'S WORTH of samples from this team last year.

Exhibit A: after the first football practice three years ago, it was easy to see Withers' regime would be going nowhere.

lol, so we do this for all sports not just football, huh?

After 1 good game against a bad team, all of a sudden we are world beaters.

Saw a tweet this morning that I'm sure was satire, but it read "We. Want. Duke."

That being said, I really hope we you're right Taxman. I would love to see a successful basketball season.

Just last year we beat McMurry (also a DIII team) 100-50 on Dec. 6th.

Last year we finished 15-18.

And as I mentioned, we were single digit points away in several games from being a 21-12 team.

How can you say it's hyperbole, when we have what is in essence the lovechild of Michael Jordan and LeBron James playing for us?!?!?!

Post Re: Turned the corner...
I am thinking about creating a bookmark folder of threads by taxman to reference after each season in football, basketball and baseball. They really are quite wonderful.

At the end of the OOC we'll know what we have. If we get through with just a couple of losses, then we can be confident about competing well in our conference & making a little bit of noise. But that is several weeks away.

Last season we were single digit points away in several games from some meaningful success. That is largely a product of our defense--few teams actually ever get away from us because we are pesty motherfuckers. The problem has been that our offense wasn't even mediocre--it was among the worst in Division 1. If we ever get the offense to even just being mediocre, we'll win a lot of games.
