Post subject:  Game Thread - @ Colorado State

After what may be a much needed 8-day break for finals, TXST is back in action Sunday as they head up to Fort Collins to take on Colorado State.

The Bobcats have been struggling in the month of December going 1-2 so far with a win vs. D3 McMurry and losses to Southland Conference teams Houston Baptist and Abilene Christian. Nagging injuries have been plaguing the bobcats as well as Nedja Prijovic has been battling tendonitis that kept him out for much of 3 games, Isaiah Gurley has been dealing with a groin injury since before the season started, and sickness has affected multiple guys on the team during the sub-par 3 game stretch as well. Hopefully the time off for finals is what the team needed to heal a bit and the team can get back into the form we saw in late November where the Cats went on a 4-1 stretch.

Colorado State is currently 4-6 on the season. They opened the season 2-0 with wins at home vs. Sacramento State and Winthrop, before going 0-2 in Jamaica vs. Tulane and Florida State. They lost their first true road game of the season at New Mexico State then returned home to beat Northwestern State. They then lost at Missouri State before winning their most recent home game against rival Colorado for easily their best win of the season. They are currently on a 2-game losing streak after losing road games at Arkansas and Oregon. They are currently 4-0 at home on the season.

This was a good team a season ago. They were 24-12 and 13-5 in MWC play, finishing alone in 2nd place. They made it to the MWC tournament championship game but fell short against Nevada to keep them out of the NCAA tournament. They accepted an invitation to the NIT where they beat Charleston before ending their season in the 2nd round with a loss to Cal State Bakersfield. They were picked 5th in the pre-season coach's poll in the 11 team Mountain West.

6'1" Jr SG Prentiss Nixon is the most dangerous scorer for the Rams. Nixon, an all-MWC honorable mention selection a year ago, is leading the team in scoring with 18.6 PPG. He's a very dangerous 3-point threat at 39.2% from 3 on the season with easily the most attempts on the team. Tyler Blount/Isaiah Gurley likely get tasked with defending Nixon. If so, that's a big assignment for the undersized Blount.

6'6" Sr Forward Che Bob is 2nd on the team in both scoring and rebounding with 10.6 PPG and 7.9 RPG. Bob did not start in the Ram's most recent game at Oregon and only played 9 minutes off the bench. Not sure if he's fully healthy or not. If Bob does start I'd expect Nijal Pearson to defend him.

3rd player to watch for CSU is 6'3" redshirt JR PG J.D. Paige. Paige looks to be a combo guard to me (similar to Nottingham for us) that could probably play the point or shooting guard. He's a big scoring threat scoring 10.5 PPG and is a 3-point threat as he shoots 35% from 3 and takes the 2nd most attempts on the team behind Nixon. One area of opportunity in Paige's game that I think we should work to exploit is he has 33 turnovers on the year to just 22 assists. Marlin Davis will likely defend Paige.

The frontcourt for the Rams is big with 6'8" Jr Power Forward Deion James and 6'11" redshirt So. Big Man Nico Carvacho (from Frisco). Both are scoring threats as James scores 9.5 PPG and Carvacho 7.1. If Ram's coach Larry Eustachy has watched film from recent TXST games I'm sure he's going to make it a point to get Carvacho more involved than usual offensively. King and Terry have both struggled against big centers recently, most glaringly against HBU a few weeks ago.

Game tips off at 4pm CST. Colorado State opened as 5.5 point favorites and the line has grown to 6.

Hopefully start to get at least decent PG play today. Unfortunately from what I've seen our best bet for that to happen is a freshman who is maybe 150lbs dripping wet. Eat em up Cats.

Miller certainly has looked promising thus far. He has a chance to be good if he can physically develop some I think.

Agreed that Davis has been disappointing so far. Nottingham has played as much at the 2 than at the point so hard to tell what he could do if given more opportunities there.

PG easily the most disappointing position on the floor so far. Ojai Black has proven he was more valuable than most realized.

Need Gurley to step up as well. Really need a slasher/scorer type who can come in and generate his own shots.

11-9 TXST at first media timeout.

Pearson leading with 4 and will be shooting 1 at the FT line coming out of the timeout trying to complete a 3-point play.

33-25 CSU. In the middle of one of our twice a game scoring droughts.

We're shooting 36.8%. CSU shooting 50%.

CSU on a 16-3 run.

42-31 CSU at halftime.

CSU shooting 55.6% from the field compared to just 39.1% for TXST.
CSU also 55.6% from 3.
Shooting really the only difference in the game, they're hitting their shots and we're not.

Pearson leads TXST with 8 points, but only played 8 minutes in the half after picking up 2 fouls. As soon as he sat we went on a huge scoring drought. Team still can't find a consistent 2nd scorer and continues to be one of the biggest issue this team has. Gurley has 6 and Peacock has 5.

Anthony Bonner, who averages 3.5 PPG on the season, has 11 off the bench. He's 3/3 from 3. Nixon has 7, Lorenzo Jenkins also has 7 off the bench.

Looks like we're on our way to our 3rd loss in 4 games.

Pearson picks up his 4th foul and, again, as soon as he exits we can't score.

CSU re-extending the lead despite not shooting near as well as the first half.

52-44 CSU with 7:31 remaining.

Post subject:  Re: Game Thread - @ Colorado State

58-55 CSU with 3:27 till halftime. Bobcats playing great D, CSU shooting 1/14 in the 2nd half, but have made 18 trips to the FT line and have made 14 to maintain their lead.

One of those college basketball games where the refs call every single little bit of contact. Worst part of the game right now and sure doesn't usually work in our favor.

Pearson has 14 and Peacock 13 for TXST.

Shit. Pearson just fouled out.

We haven't been able to do anything this entire game with him on the bench.

Post subject:  Re: Game Thread - @ Colorado State

Shelby Adams with the 3.

61-58 CSU with 2:26 left. Ram ball.
