Post Game Thread - Vs. St. Edwards (Exhibition)
Basketball season is here!!!!

We'll get a glimpse at the 2017-2018 squad for the first time tonight at 7pm as Texas State plays St. Edwards in an exhibition game to raise funds for Hurricane Harvey Relief. Game will tip off at 7pm.

Admission to the game will be free with cash donations being accepted and donated directly to the United Way Jefferson County to help support recovery efforts in the Beaumont area. The Bobcats originally only scheduled one exhibition game (Friday night vs. Rogers State), but added this one to help raise funds for Harvey Relief. Noble gesture by the Hilltoppers and Bobcats.

My prediction for starting lineup:
PG - Marlin Davis
SG - Isaiah Gurley
SF - Nijal Pearson
PF - Nedja Prijovic
C - Immanuel King

With this being an exhibition game I believe everybody on the roster should be able to play, including redshirts, meaning we should get a good look at the entire squad.

At Point Guard, expect sophomore Marlin Davis to take over after backing up the graduated Ojai Black last year. Davis has big shoes to fill as Black was an excellent defender and ran Danny Kaspar's offense well. Davis averaged over 13 minutes per game last year relieving Black so does have an entire year of experience in the system. He averaged 3.2 PPG and had 54 assists last year to 31 turnovers. Primary backup at this point is probably JUCO transfer Tre Nottingham. Nottingham played the last two seasons at Mt. San Jacinto College. Last year he averaged 19.2 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 5.4 APG, and 2.3 SPG. He was the top scorer in the California Community College Athletic Association last year. He had offers from Colorado State, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, Hawaii, and Quinnipiac. True Freshman Reggie Miller will provide depth at the point. Miller is small, listed at only 6-0, 150 lbs. He's out of Klein Forest where he averaged 13 PPG, 5 RPG, 5 APG, and 3 SPG. Klein Forest was one of the top high school teams in the entire country last year going 34-1. Winning pedigree and a winning namesake can't hurt. Jaylead Shead may play tonight, but he will have to redshirt this season after transferring from Cal Poly this year.

Isaiah Gurley is the favorite to start at shooting guard to replace Bobby Conley. Gurley is a JUCO transfer out of McLennan Community College in Waco. This will actually be Gurley's 4th season of collegiate basketball as he played for Canisius out of high school. He redshirted his first season then played his redshirt freshman season at Canisius where he came off the bench and averaged 2.8 PPG and 1.9 RPG. He was named the newcomer of the year last year in his JUCO conference after averaging 17.5 PPG, 5.2 RPG, and 2.3 APG. Last year's backup Tyler Blount returns and may be in the same role for his senior year. The undersized shooting guard played in almost every game last year and made one start averaging 2.8 PPG. The Bobcats need Blount to be a big 3-point threat as a 5-11 shooting guard. Blount made 22 of 63 (34.9%) 3-point attempts last year. True Freshman Shelby Adams will also compete for playing time out of Converse Judson. Adams averaged 21.4 PPG as a senior at Judson and had offers from SMU, UTSA, and SHSU.

Nijal Pearson returns after a phenomenal freshman season and will be asked to lead the team as a sophomore after the graduation of last year's leader Kavin Gilder-Tilbury. Pearson started all 36 games last year as a true freshman. Not only did he start every game as a true freshman but he set the Texas State all-time record for single-season minutes played. He led the team in rebounding last year with 5.7 RPG and finished 2nd in scoring at 13.3 PPG. Pearson's backup Deris Duncan returns and will be in the same role for his senior season. Duncan played sparingly last year due to all the minutes played by Pearson and averaged 1.0 PPG and 0.7 RPG.

Texas State lost it's best player from last season in Kavin Gilder-Tilbury. His backup last year, Nedja Prijovic is poised to take over as the full-time starter after a successful freshman season. Prijovic started playing well down the stretch last year as he got more comfortable in Kaspar's system. Prijovic averaged 4.2 PPG and 3.7 RPG last year. Prijovic's backup is likely to be JUCO transfer Alex Peacock. Peacock is a 6-7, 215 lb JR who played his last two seasons at Iowa Western Community College. Peacock averaged 10.5 PPG and 5.9 RPG last year. Walk-on freshman Quentin Scott will provide some deep depth here but unlikely to get significant minutes. Scott played for Conrad Academy in Houma, La last year where he averaged a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds a game. At 6-7, 215 Scott has decent size.

Immanuel King returns for his senior year after a pretty successful Junior season for the Bobcats. King is another player that got significantly better as the season wore on like Prijovic. King played really well in the Sun Belt tournament scoring a season high 13 points in the Bobcats upset over top-seed UTA in the semi-finals before putting up 11 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 blocks in the Championship game. Over the course of the season King averaged 5.6 PPG and 4.6 RPG. Eric Terry will likely start the year backing up King after redshirting last year with TXST. Terry will be a redshirt Sophomore after playing two years ago at Temple College. Terry caught the eye of Kaspar in practice late last year to the point where Kaspar questioned his own decision to redshirt Terry in a press conference late last season. If nothing else, at 6-8 230, Terry will help bulk up the 5 position. True freshman Alonzo Sule will also compete for playing time at the center position. The 6-7 200lb Sule played at Cinco Ranch HS last year where he averaged 10.8 PPG and 7.2 RPG.

Im at the game. Noticing a few things:

1) we look mire atheltic and more talented, but raw.
2) the project players: sule, Scott, Miller will be great players if developed correctly. Sule + scott espcially.
3) Eric Terry brings some much needed offensive firepower to the paint. And honestly I can see him getting the start over King.
4) Shelby Adams will make an immediate impact much like Nijal. He’s got a great court prescence.
5) isiah Gurley isn’t dressed up. He’s sitting with red shirt transfer Jaylen Shead currently.

That stinks on Gurley. Hopefully nothing serious.

“He’s looking very good in practice. Very athletic player, probably the most complete shooter/athlete we’ve had at the 2-guard spot since I’ve been here.” That was Kaspar's quote on him from Keff's article and a couple other places.

Talked to coack K's wife and she said Gurley's injury wasn't too bad but she did not know when he would be back. The transfer from Cal Poly is injured as well. I should have asked her more but did not. Prijovic flipped over the top of a St Eds player and landed on his back. He later tried to come back in but pulled himself out. Hopefully his injury is not too serious. M King played about like I would at this point. He looked terrible. I think he will be ok as the season goes on though. This was a well needed exh. game. Glad we have another one saturday.

What stadium renovations are complete at this point? Saw the highlights on the news this morning and "the wall" was still there.
