My guess is that it would be more of a negative(RPI) for their bskball team than a $ savings for a big school like those mentioned.

every p5 has 5-7 games vs teams w/ terrible rpi. no reason one of those shouldn't be against us.

Plus Texas State finished last year with an RPI of .498, which was good enough to rank 172 out of 351. Is that the best finish ever? They are moving in the right direction, I expect the RPI to improve this season. Put the updated University Events Center with the better RPI, I think we will get OOC games at home that would entice me to make the drive from Houston to see in person.

Now I agree that the improvements to Strahan should hopefully entice a few more "name" schools to visit, but I just don't see the gain(again rpi or sos) for the other schools program. True our men did very well compared to past years, but we need to continue improving and get to a certain level of standing in order for good teams to want to come to TXST. I know this was discussed in another thread on this site. Also, DK and the AD have to get those good teams here, and I don't think they are ready to do that yet.

Don't take what I'm saying and think I don't want to see schools like FSU, CU and such play in SM. I would make the drive too from Houston if on a weekend. I want us to be successful and go to more post season tournaments just as much as the next TXST sports fan. I'm just trying to be realistic about our program.

Our home non-conference schedule last year was:
Southeastern Oklahoma State (Exhibition) - D2
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
McNeese State
Oklahoma Panhandle State - D2
Prairie View A&M
Howard Payne - D3

It's pathetic and sorely needs to be improved upon and quickly.

We finished 312th in free throw shooting last season. This season is off to another rough start in that category. Would like to see us shoot around 75% this season to have a good chance at being competitive again

It blows my mind how anyone could be bad at free throws.

75% free throws last season would have been good for 40th in ncaa.... remind me again why 40th would be considered 'elite'? oh, because we chose to go to school in San Marcos where anything inside the top 100 is off the charts incredible

Having a decent FT % is a reflection of good coaching and practicing...you don't have to be freak athlete to practice hard and be well coached. When you are a program that struggles to hold on to the ball the last thing you can't afford to be bad at is FT shooting

40% would have tied us for 38th. how can you not look up facts accurately?

38 out of 347 is top 11% in the country (10.95, to be exact), and i would think anything in the top 15% would be considered elite, especially given that the best ft% was only 5% better at 80%.

Not sure how we're a "program that struggles to hold on to the ball" either.

We were 72nd in turnover margin last year and 61st in fewest turnovers per game.

Bobbumman probably doesn't track college basketball in general.

I'm not shocked by the number of turnovers this first real game, given the switchover in player personnel. The same thing happened last season with our opener against FAU--19 turnovers. We ended-up averaging 11.8 for the season. It is also notable that we create more turnovers for opponents than we commit, and that we are on a downward trend in committing turnovers.

16-17: 11.8 compared to 13.4 opponent (#72 for turnover margin)
15-16: 11.9 us compared to 14.2 opponent (#43 turnover margin)
14-15: 12.7 us compared to 15.4 opponent (#30 turnover margin)

Getting into the top quarter of any positive statistical category is a big deal for our program, at this point.

Our scoring defenses have been Top 25 the past three seasons as well.

Our challenge is offensive production. We finished last season at #304 with 66.9 ppg. 15-16 was #308 with 66.0. #305 with 61.5. We hold the ball a LONG time in possession. If we could get into just the top half for offensive production, maintaining scoring defense, we would be very, VERY tough to beat. I'm optimistic we'll see positive movement with the offense. It isn't a big ask--just adding about 3 ppg in each of the next couple of seasons would get us into the low 70s.

My long-standing beef with Kaspar's team has been shot selection & shooting confidence. I'm hoping we break the habit of settling for the lower percentage outside shots.
