Post Defense - Zac Spavital
I want to get everyone's thoughts on this guy. I will start off with the glimmer of optimism. He was a Grad assistant under Brent Venables (Clemson) and Bob Stoops at Oklahoma. For those that are not in the know that was when Oklahoma had a defense.

thanks for quoting it?

oddly, the best defenses he coached on were random years at uh when they were really good on that side of the ball...mixed in w/ being atrocious on that side of the ball...

ncaa scoring defense rank(yr): 15 ('14), 20 ('13), 35 ('11)

He's been the recruiting coordinator at both UH and TT the last 7 years! Nice.

He's not proven but neither is Jake. I would hope there's a natural synergy there. As much as people wanted to leave our defense alone and keep Woods, I think that we need a defense that better compliments Spav's offense which this may accomplish. With his background, Zac has the potential to be a successful SBC DC. That said, I don't like family ties in coaching staffs, so I don't care for the hire.

Ran an aggressive, turnover-causing position at Tech and UH. We already proved this year the defense has a lot of the similar traits. Don't see much dropoff from last year's production.

unless key contributors on d realize they can transfer somewhere that is already winning

Don't see that happening. Spavital is a player's coach, most will be ok with him coming in.

Tech ran a very very bad defense under Gibbs. Write-up from earlier this season.

https://wreckemred.com/2018/09/21/texas-tech-football-david-gibbs-rely-heavily-turnovers/

Quote:
Under Gibbs, Tech has allowed 39.7 points per game in 41 games. But in the nine games Tech has gone without a takeaway during that span, the defense has allowed an average of 55.1 points per game.

Taking it a step further, Tech has forced one or fewer turnovers 21 times under Gibbs. In those games, it has given up an average of 48.8 points per game.

What is eye-opening about turnovers in college football is that the top defenses in the nation do not rely on taking the ball away. For instance, Alabama, which led the country in scoring defense last year, forced only 24 takeaways, five fewer than Texas Tech, despite playing in one more game.

Relying too heavily on turnovers is a strategy that defensive coordinators must use when they lack the talent on the roster to stop defenses in other, more controllable ways. That was the issue facing Gibbs in his first two seasons but recently, he has said that he finally feels like he has a legitimate Big 12 defense in place.

Not knowing a lot about him i decided to browse 247 and see how well he recruited. For the 2019 class he was currently the 28th best Big12 recruiter with 3 3*s. 2018 he was the 75th best in Big12 with 1 commit and in 2017 was lower than 65 ranking (doesn't seem to show below that).

Here's his comprehensive list of recruits.

1) those are total defense (yards), not scoring defense (points) - one is an indicator, one actually matters to win/loss.

in scoring def: txst is #71 @ 27.7ppg; tt is #86 @ 31.1ppg

2) those numbers don't mean much anyway, because of how disparate our competition is. their fbs opponents avg over 7 ppg scored more than ours, and individually it's even more so:
we faced 4 opp avging over 30ppg, they faced 6
we faced 1 opp avging over 35ppg, they faced 4
we faced 0 opp avging over 40ppg, they faced 3

Mmm, smells like nepotism!
