Possibly. The difference? Fran actually could win with those guys. Withers hasn't been able to even with now having his own guys and having a significant increase in budget.

Fran went 6-6 with more scholarships against FCS foes.

Then as a transitional team, he went 4-8.

So let's not pretend Fran made us some powerhouse in his first two seasons as coach. That would be disingenuous.

Don't you think?

Yeah, but let's not discount the WAC's 2012 conference lineup:

USU finished with a #32 FPI
Latech finished #49 FPI
SJSU finished with a #56 FPI

OOC TTU finished with a #30 FPI
OOC Nevada finished with a #72 FPI
OOC UH and Navy finished with #87/88 FPI

7 top 90 opponents

Remind us of another year when we played that kind of prestige for the most part week in and week out?

I never claimed he turned Texas State into a powerhouse.

But by your own admission, he won twice as many games per year as a transitional team with a harder schedule and worse budget/facilities.

My point is further solidified: Fran did far more with far less.

And with the exception of UH, we got beat in all those games, right? I mean, I could see your point if we won some of those games in showing that the record is not indicative.

But we lost all those. And we lost to UTSA who was in their.... second? season of existence.

We also barely skated by SFA by 4 points that season when they went on a tremendous run of 5-6 in the southland.

And to be clear, I'm not even saying Fran sucked in those two years. I think he did pretty ok which was light years ahead of what we had prior to that. But it's just not accurate to talk about how Fran was winning when the reality is... he did... meh.

winning 3 games w/ 4+ recruiting classes is far more with far less than winning 2 games w/ 1+ recruiting class?

How convenient of you to use only one year, Fran's worst, as support for your argument.

The truth is that Fran, with less talent and a harder schedule, won more every single year than Withers has in either of his years. 3 wins? Sure, but you should check out the other win totals in his other years.

super convenient to use what should have been fran's best team, with a roster full of his players, including the most upperclass heavy roster of his tenure(v.2).

Yup. They went 7-5 the season before, returned a senior heavy roster with key positions returning, some injuries like Orakpo, and won 3 games. I still think the team quit after not getting a bowl invite two straight years. But the fact is Fran should have had his best year and won 3 games and then quit with a depleted roster. I am not trying to defend EW as much as trying to say he was given a very tough hand to play. Factor in players that quit or got kicked off and you are in the current mess we are in.

Resutls should improve this year but I fear we still don't have a QB with experience who is ready to help carry the team.

Not to mention Fran played a much weaker Sun Belt Conference than Withers did.

Where is this perception coming from that those teams in 2013/2014 were less talented than the last couple seasons? Those teams had far more talent on them than anything we've put out there since.

Also, the only Fran year you can make the argument had a tougher schedule was 2012 in the WAC. 2011 we played an FCS schedule and the 2016/2017 Sun Belt was better than the 2013-2015 Sun Belt. Aside from one season Fran teams certainly did not face tougher schedules.

In 5 years, Fran only beat 1 FBS team with a winning record.

2014 7-6 Arkansas St, second to last game of the season, they had like 10 starters out with injury.

Important to note: Withers beat the a winning FBS team his very first game.

Now, to make sure it's complete, I can also say that he has NO other FBS wins (the closest would be FBS transitional CCU last year, but I don't count that). So there's that.

Basically... NEITHER coach has set the world on fire. It is 100% proof that Fran will NOT set the world on fire (here at least). Withers has a chance at it, though he has many detractors. Some are legitimate (run faster), some are just butthurt because apparently they got put in the corner (we ALL know who that is).

Awad is one of Withers’ few recruits that has separated himself from the rest. After that Withers recruiting still remains to be seen it’s plan and simple
