It was mentioned in the McCray post. But not much attention to it.

Hard to find out much about him. Was DC at Columbia and D-Line coach/special teams at Bryant (FCS -NEC), HC at some D III schools. Meh, seems to have been a coach for a while.

not a particularly inspiring hire, to say the least, but he's definitely been around the block. last gig was as a qc guy that big time programs stash on their staff - they break down film/schemes and help the coaches, but can't recruit off campus. attempting to put together his bio from various sources:

2015-17 DQC Oklahoma (FBS)
2012-14 DC Holmes CC, Miss (JUCO)
2011 DC/LB Columbia (FCS)
2008-10 DL/ST Bryant (FCS)
2007 LB/ST Harvard (FCS)
2004-06 HC Stonehill (D2)
2001-03 HC Mansfield (D2)
1996-99 AHC/DC/LB Wittenburg (D3)
1994-95 Interim HC Plymouth State (D3)

his 1st gig was actually pretty impressive, as psc went undefeated in the regular season - that's a 22/23yo(?) hc leading guys that are almost the same age. and as someone who went to hs in new hampshire, i can tell you psc is a horrible place to coach/recruit.

overall trajectory isn't really impressive, but i've always liked ou's defenses, so hopefully he brings something from that regime. his results seem to have been pretty decent too, which makes the trajectory a bit of a head-scratcher.

Is this for sure or still rumor he'll be DC? A little disappointed if so. Withers usually makes pretty good hires. Wish we could have gotten someone like corey raymond as DC. Elite recruiter and DC will be his next stop. Plus it sounds like he wants out from undere Orgeron (but who the hell doesn't?). Probably too expensive but we have to start paying more for our coaches.

everyone has confirmed he is dc except for txst.

and yes, raymond is out of our price range. he's pulling $410k and mccray was at $140k. no ac from lsu is going anywhere unless they are pushed out. they are paying through the nose, second only to bama. http://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/salarie ... /assistant

Wellll bummer. I think pay is what's keeping them there. It's not public but I also think the only reason Aranda did not go to A&M was him being promised first shot at HC after O is fired in a year or two. No way O lasts longer than that. He was a horrendous hire.

You're joking, right? By far, that has been Withers' biggest fault and what will eventually cost him his job.

Because the guy he hired just got hired away by a NFL team?

It is very, very rare that an FBS coordinator takes an NFL assistant position job. This isn't a special teams coordinator job, but rather, an assistant special teams coaching position. In fact, you see more assistant position coaches (not the receivers coach, but the "assistant receivers coach") taking a full-time FBS position than a full-time FBS coach taking an assistant position job in the NFL.

You can just look around and see, by far, that NFL assistant position coaches leave to take full-time FBS positions. For an FBS coordinator to take an assistant position job? Most see that as a step down.

I would venture to guess that almost every single assistant position coach (again, not the actual position coach, but the assistant position coach) would leave if offered an offensive/defensive coordinator job at an FBS.

browns hc hue jackson went from usc oc to redskins rbc
texans hc bill o'brien went from duke oc to patriots offensive coach (no position)
vikings hc mike zimmer went from wash st dc to cowboys dbc
bengals oc bill lazor went from uva oc to eagles qbc
steelers oc randy fichtner went from memphis oc to steelers wrc
chiefs oc eric bieniemy went from colorado oc to chiefs rbc
vikings oc john defilippo went from sjsu oc to raiders qbc
panthers oc norv turner went from usc oc to rams wrc
bucaneers oc todd monken went from lsu pgc to jaguars wrc
ravens dc don martindale went from wku dc to raiders lbc
bengals dc teryl austin went from florida dc to ravens dbc
steelers dc keith butler went from arkst dc to browns lbc
colts dc matt eberflus went from mizzou dc to browns lbc
seahawks dc ken norton jr went from usc ahc to seahawks lbc

that's 14 out of 90ish nfl hc/dc/oc that went from fbs coordinator to nfl position coach. given that 30-40% of nfl coaches never coached in college at all, it doesn't seem very, very rare. also, given that i only looked at 1 yr's worth of data, and only 3 of the 12-20 nfl coaching positions per team, it's reasonable to assume that there are quite a few others that fit the criteria.

Just as a point of clarification... He is taking umbrage that the coach left for an ASSISTANT to the player group coaching job.

He is saying that lots go for a position coaching job, but not many go for the assistant position coaching job.

I honestly couldn't tell you how frequent or infrequent it is, because I don't follow coaching hires that much. But it's a slight difference between the data points you provided and his argument.

The money thing though... that's a tough one to get over (and one we will most likely have for the foreseeable future, as Larry is too busy getting raises despite his lack of progress).

special teams isn't a position, that's why it has a coordinator. he's a special teams assistant - same level as a position coach. which is why every example i provided was fbs coordinator to nfl position coach.
