Good Vibes: What's behind the Texas State's chemistry in fall camp?

Post Re: Practice Reports
"The most drastic step Withers took to forming cohesion? He moved the whole team to one apartment complex at The Outpost before fall camp. Now that’s typical at most universities, but Texas State was the only program he’d been a part of that didn’t have the team mostly living together. It was a no-brainer for him to change that.

“When I got here and guys were living in apartments all over San Marcos, I was like I’d never seen that before,” Withers said. “That was unique to me and I don’t know how you grow a team atmosphere if you don’t live together as a football program."

Thanks Fran. I'm actually higher on Fran than most from a development and X and O standpoint, with the exception of play calling. But the overall culture building aspect coaching completely escaped him, and that's where things fell apart. When he had on the field leaders, he could put together a pretty good record. But when he didn't, the team became infested with a crap culture of not giving a damn. His last team finishing the way it did was one of the most pathetic things Ive seen in college football. It is also why the "Withers got rid of too many guys" crowd is dead wrong. You have to kill a culture like that with fire.

I have talked to 3 former players (via phone and no, I'm not naming them) about some of this. Fran had leaders. He started the "leader's council" (or whatever you want to call it) with a so called open door policy but it was smoke and mirrors. Every time those guys took concerns to him he sent them packing (IOW - get the fuck out of here). That's why he lost the team. There were several seniors that thought long and hard about transferring for their final year but stuck it out because they were so close to graduating that it wasn't worth the hassle of sitting out a year.
They, more or less, slept through their last year on the team.

I know for a fact that's not true on both those counts. Smoke and mirrors.

Taxman, I'm not sure what you are arguing. You bolded the part about the apartment complex. Also do you think the last year with Fran the team had a good culture? It appeared to be horrendous with zero effort from many players. Guys on the sidelines laughing it up and not even watching the game during routine ass kickings. Never seen anything like it.

Post Re: Practice Reports
I don't care how or what happened, I like that things are being done to change whatever it was.

I'd rather talk about things we have heard since the TXST roster was posted in early August.

Offense:
QB added Williams Friday/Saturday to group of 4 (with Kelley still not yet throwing)
RB added Jaylin Nelson to group (4 RBs on ship with Tutt injured being #5)
TE Have not heard much about this group (good or bad)
WR has been noted to have improved from year 1 to year 2 noting many newcomers like Dennis Johnson, Haydel, Twyford, Bedford
OL has had a few changes as they look for their best 5 and then backups: Foster started 2nd scrimmage at LT with Mizerak at RT, Rowland back and forth between T/G, to name a few things I've heard
Defense:
NT with Awad and Patton (I was wrong with Patton, thought he'd be a good DT) as they have the size inside needed
DT Mittie and Lanza
DE Davis and Dean Taylor; Hines a 3rd down specialist
ILB Loyd and Daniels at one position; London and Lewis at other (Withers is excited about these 4)
OLB Graham moved back to OLB; Anyama and Vinson on one side; Griffin/Coleman on other
CB Waddy, Taylor, Eastling, Aneke, Roach
S Rodgers moved to position (likely telling about either seniors or youth at position)
K Ripley put on ship
WR Luna put on earlier per someone either on here or twitter

Also, Withers has noted the most talented position being LB while most improved being WR.

I miss anything? Any other player position changes or names you've heard positive about from coaches?

You forget... Taxman has some sort of one sided blood feud with Withers. So he will refute anything he can, claim he has insider information, and everyone else is just snowed.

So... consider the source.

I noticed at the scrimmage 2 weeks ago that Patton is only listed at 285 lbs but he's built very thick. He's a solid 285. He also seems to play with a bit of a mean streak.

Oh, I am well aware. Just seeing how far he is willing to take it. Defending the culture of Fran during the last season is a pretty damn difficult thing to do.

Anyway, enough derailing from me. Back to practice reports.

at least "fran's 0 effort dumpster fire 2015 season players" could still stomp ulm and usa. that's 2 more conference wins than withers got. that speaks volumes about withers on field coaching ability

Whew lad. Were you at those games? That ULM game was one of the worst football games I've ever seen in my life.

yeah it was awful. but a conference win is a conference win. had that sorrowfest still on dvr until i replaced the recording with the 5 hour feud with ohio which i'll likely keep recorded for a long time because i don't see withers matching that win anytime soon

I will have a huge problem if withers if we look like that in year 5 like it was for Fran. Trying to equate years 1 and 5 of a tenure is foolish, but you know that.
