Post 2018: Roster updates, position changes
With the Dave Campbell's Magazine out now and articles written by San Marcos sports writer Ishmael Johnson, gives us some information and either Mr. Johnson's expected depth chart or his view based on input of TXST coaches (I'm not sure).

His 2-deep for Offense had some surprises.
-He had all new starting WRs with Morbley/Haydel on one side and Hays/Hutch White on other side with Watts on the inside backed up by TV Williams.
-This was somewhat surprising to see considering players like King and Luna are more physically stronger. Consider we'll want to run the ball too. We'll see how it shapes up this August. Also, no TJ Bedford rather Haydel and Hutch White. I do think he has Caleb Twyford in right position as a slot receiver.
-The OL wasn't too surprising but it has Pesa (non-qualifier so not coming to TXST) on 2-deep at guard. It also has Rowland at RT and Carlile backing him up. JC Mayes is listed as guard and that was what I expected too. Foster backing up LT and Jordan backing up Brewer.
-TE has JC signee Rogers behind Schrade and French 3rd team

Defensively, it wasn't too surprising.
-listed as big DE (labeled position is DT) is Mittie and Dean Taylor. I'm not sure Dean Taylor would move to DT or leave on other sie with DE Davis to have more balance on that side (size and strength at position, especially after you read note on Caeveon Patton's use)
-NT is Awad and Lilly
-DE Davis and Banks at this time
-Ishmael Johnson notes Caeveon Patton as "ideal 3-4 DE" but to expect DC McCray to utilized him at NT too (my guess like we did Mittie last season). If so, expect him to get reps at DT and NT is my guess.
-ILBs weren't too surprising nor was OLB with exception of Hines 3rd string behind Vinson and Anyama. I'd be really surprised if he's not backup or starter on other side instead of current Griffin/London Harris unless we want a physical OLB and a speedster OLB on other side based on scheme (most teams go 3-4 WRs in today's game). We'll see.
-CBs were as expected but S was surprising to see no Stephan Johnson in 2-deep.

Do keep in mind Ishmael Johnson's articles were likely written a month ago before Pesa was not going to make it in and with only information from end of May or early June.

NOTE:
Saul indicated some position updates on 2017 Roster posting and I thought I'd post here. Considering Saul's updates, it helps to understand that Mittie will be at DT not NT in 3-4D. He could get reps at NT but it would not be his main position.

Saul:
from the austin alumni assn / coaches happy hour:

qb - gipson and wj3 are going to stay at qb, nelson to rb, kelley to wr or db. williams won't be named starter, but he's the starter.

rb - anthony smith and robert brown are likely 1, 2

dean taylor is up to 285 now (signed at 230)
jordan mittie is up to 275 and will be at dt

Post Re: 2018: Roster updates, position changes
Lancer...

You da man! Thanks for this! Huge and to some degree confirms Ishmael Johnson's 2-deep on DC Football magazine.

Surprised to see Hines as DE instead of say Nick Wilkins 6'2/250 or even Hal Vinson 6'1/240 there. I can understand trying to use Hines' quickness but at 6'3/225... that is very light to play DE in 34D! If Hines gets up to 240+, I could see it but at 225... yikes! Here's to hoping he either gets bigger physically or that someone else steps up! I think Hines at OLB makes way more sense. Summer is summer so I wouldn't assume each of these are in concrete.

I'm guessing they are posting best capable at each position. I does seem (as noted before with Ish Johnson's 2-deep) that we will be going big at 1 OLB (Bandit) and the other will be between a small LB and DB (Sam) with Griffin/Coleman/London Harris at able to use speed to cover or blitz.

-Looks like Kelly is not out just yet at QB compared but we'll see come August.
-RB is different that what we've heard in rumors. I'm not too surprised to see that 3 up top but come August it could change and will likely.
-TE about what I'd expect.
-WR:
Hays/Bedford makes sense
Luna/Morbley look odd as they are different styles one physical and the other speed
Watts/Twyford then TV Williams... TV better get going or he'll be watching on TV! Ha! JOKE and a bad one that that!
-LT looks good
-LG looks interesting but at same time concerning with top 2 there this past spring (go read Dave Campbell's Mag on development of London from spring to summer to August to season of last year... thats the progression Withers wants to see). Point being still time for OGs to get it together.
-C looks about right
-RG not surprising
-RT same (was hoping Mayes to OG due to his 220 size)
-DT not surprising as its a big DE position (well that is what I called it since we went to 34 last season)
-NT looks about right and expected this early (summer for Awad/Daniels)
-DE is somewhat surprising unless Banks is up to 250+ and Hines is same, if not... scary small at DE (but scheme wise it may be what they want)
-OLBs... not surprising and this core could be scary good by midseason!
-CBs aren't too surprising and I wouldn't be surprised to see both Rodgers and Roach either part of 2-deep or the spare at each position by mid-season
-S again aren't too surprising other than Stephan Johnson. Has he clocked out and waiting to graduate??? Going from freshmen starter to soph starter to losing position junior year to 4th team now. Ugh. Talking about taking steps back... major steps back!
-K/P no surprise.

Coaching news:

http://coachingsearch.com/coaching-search-ticker

Looks like TXST will go with only 9 coaches per link:

Texas State: Per source, defensive graduate assistant Preston Mason will be promoted to safeties coach, and defensive coordinator / inside linebackers coach Randall McCray will coach all of the linebackers. Mason is entering his second season on the Texas State staff. This fills the last open FBS assistant job. Posted June 28th.

I'm cool with Coach McCray coaching all LBs but will that take him away from his DC work/time is the concern. Lets hope not.

Spoke with one of the defensive starters last night, told me that the summer workouts have everyone pumped for a good season of beating expectations/naysayers. Mentioned that if the offense can find good chemistry, Williams will put up some hefty numbers in both passing and rushing.

taxman...

Is that something positive from you about a player's expectations. They seem pretty reasonable based on what the player said. If OL can get chemistry going (its obvious we'll not be the best OL) and can run the ball to some level (say just under or at 100 yard a game); maybe we'll do enough to help Williams.

The things I've seen or considered upgrades were at:
-RB with 2-3 new possible guys going into August from Smith, Brown, and even Jaylin Nelson
-TE adding JC Rodgers may be insurance as last season French was injured most of season and Rushing is still learning on the job (last season was Schrade and then anyone else)
-WR depth could be coming in likes of TV Williams, TJ Bedford, Twyford, and Haydel... could a walk-on surprise? Never know.
-OL newbies... I'd expect 3-4 of the 5 that signed to get on field this year at some point (Foster, Carlile, Mayes, and C Jordan with King being the only one I'm not sure of).
-DL newbies will need to play (Awad, Daniels, Patton are likely)
-LBs should be fun to watch no matter how it plays out (still hoping Hines is at OLB and not DE based on what is shown above board photo...ugh)
-DBs will need to step up and Roach has great opportunity to play early and I will not count out such an athlete in Kordell Rodgers in getting on field.

Its pretty obvious for us that execution, chemistry, and some luck will be needed to win more games this season.

Great stuff guys. Useful information.

From what little I have heard from a players perspective, the mood is much better this year.

Post Re: 2018: Roster updates, position changes
If Hines isn't going to start or even be in the 2-deep at OLB, I'm fine with moving him to DE. Even at 225, he can be a pass rush specialist.

We have been really bad at DE the past few years, the problem is that our DE's have been either so unathletic and/or undersized that a smaller guy like Hines who should be a pass-rush specialist was playing all four downs.

In the past 3-4 years, we've had the unathletic (Nikocevic, Pearson, Dallas, Gruendling, Clavel-Head, Eddings, Gambrell) and undersized (Mitte, Taylor, Davis, Banks, Odiari, Berry, Peterson).

Now that Mittie, Taylor, Davis, and Banks have grown into the position (all now athletic and above 250 lbs), we can afford to move a guy like Hines over and it doesn't seem like a desperation move. He should be able to grow into the position as well.

FWIW, I think Taylor and Vinson look pretty impressive in some of the workout videos the coaching staff has been putting out. Hopefully those guys have breakout years.

tx.state...

Good point on the DE types we've had in the past. I'm just not keen to believe a 6'3/225 DE is realistic. Last year, Dean Taylor supposedly played around 6'5/235ish but as Withers noted... he was raw and was out of position learning on the job. My point being that he was undersized.

Now, one thing I do hope to see at some point (not sure this year) is that when we have a 3rd and long... we may use 1 OLB with his hand down like a DE with two other true DL (A&M used to go with a DT/NG and two OLBs that averaged 240 at OLB in a 3 down linemen in order to get more speed on the field (2 OLBs like DEs and still have 1-2 OLBs on field as well to possibly blitz = lot of speed on field at same time). That makes sense to get more speed on field but an every down DE at 6'3/225... Ugh. I'm not a great Xs/Os guy so I'd defer that to those that know it better.

This is just a summer 2-deep so a lot can change come August. I do like seeing Lewis backing up London at WillLB and Daniels backing Loyd at MikeLB. It just makes sense due to their size and skills. Lewis highlights were all athlete like London and Daniels is strong and quick.

Also, I'm not sure Banks has added any weight since last year still listed at 240 like last season. If he's up to say 250, that would be great!

Something else to keep an eye on that could be happening for next season's D.

The three down lineman looking in a lot of ways interchangeable. For example, you have a NT position and a DT position in the 3 down lineman and the last position is a DE. The two NT/DT are about the same size as 2 DTs in a 4-3 D (we're not there yet but getting closer to that size) while one DE has 3 listed from 260-225 right now. Well, it just so happens that one of the OLBs lists 2 240lb guys... in some hybrid looks, we could sure look like a 4-3 with two ILBs and a fast OLB (ala Weak side LB). Last time we saw something similar was under Coach Thompson in the 7-5 season where he used some 3-4 in his base 4-2-5 defense.

I think this was discussed but Kiesten Roach is no longer on the TXST roster:
http://www.txstatebobcats.com/roster.aspx?path=football&

Lets hope he makes in by August but considering he's not in yet, not good. If he's a no go, can't imagine Kordell Rogers won't be at CB. I wouldn't be surprised if someone like Dila Rosemond may have to move back to CB for depth.

Elijah King and LG williams were both lost after the season in the offseason? really stings and it' tough to swallow losing players in a conditioning/practice environment...can't afford for that kind of stuff to happen

then tutt goes out in a season and a half ending injury ONE game after he would have recieved a medical redshirt? that's miserable too

LG Williams has been out. Rampant concussion issues during the season, along with Will Copa.

Yeah Williams was a medical issue.

Is King confirmed gone? May have just missed it, but don't recall reading that.
