Post Intriguing PWO: RB Jaren Watkins, Pulaski – 5’4”, 154-lbs
When I was looking through Keff's list of PWOs -- I noticed this guy, Jaren Watkins. I thought to myself, "How is this guy anything but a normal walk-on?!" I took a look at his twitter. He had PWO offers from other Sun Belt schools like Ark St and ULM. He's got insane burst and decent vision + cut backs. 4.41 40, 2066 yd season. Will he be anything? His size says otherwise and he's got to bulk up a bit, but his film is A LOT of fun to watch. Enjoy:

of note (at least to me) - this is the high school that never punts.

also, i'm never a fan of gimmicky type players, but there are plenty of midget playmakers to point at as a reason to bring a kid like this in. quentin griffin, darren sproles, bob sanders, maurice jones-drew. if his weightroom numbers are to be believed, then WHOA! bench 225x19 and 345 max?? 505 squat??

i'll definitely be rooting for this kid here. good find, larry - about damn time you did something worthwhile!

Poor man's Jakeem Grant? I'd take that.

The 5'7" Mishak Rivas comes to mind. Not a direct copy in skills but the small size RB + crazy stats + entertaining highlights are very similar.

Can he catch kicks and punts?

I just say let them earn it. They have the opportunity but they need to make the best of it or they'll be on practice squad for career or transfer.

That simple.

His Hudl video says he did 19 reps of 225lbs on the bench. If that's legit, he did more reps than 126 players at this year's NFL combine (http://bit.ly/2p8PJ5l), including Texas A&M's Daeshon Hall (18).

He may be tiny, but he apparently packs a punch. And he's lightning fast.

He ran that one guy over pretty impressively in one of the highlights. Those bench and squat numbers are hard to believe... but he could just be a freak like that.

Thanks for sharing. That's a hell of a highlight reel for a guy who didn't get a scholarship.

I'm sure the coaching staff will be a fan of this kid. I bet he has to work pretty damn hard.

It's the size of the fight in the dog. :-)

Danny Woodhead came out of a little D2 college and has lasted almost 10 years in the NFL.

Ryan Melton only did 14 reps at the TXST pro day.

Honestly, how does an FBS starting offensive lineman only do 14 reps.

He also ran a 5.78 40 which would have been among the very slowest at the combine.

I'm not really trying to jump on the kid, so I'll say two things:

1. Technique can mask a lack of strength easily. Not saying strength doesn't help, but you can play FBS without being extremely strong on the line.

He better be REALLY quick on his feet, and have POWERFUL legs, though.

2. I don't see how you could run that slow and do that few of reps KNOWING there was a pro day coming up. I wonder if he really thought scouts would pay attention to him.

I think he's getting a tryout with the Titans also, right?

Yeah, I wasn't really trying to jump on Melton...by all account he seems like a really good kid who has played hard the past few years. I was using him as an example of how incredibly un-athletic we have been. Bellard ran a 5.49 and only did 15 reps at his pro day...not much better.
