Post Updates to 2017 Football Roster
The staff has updated the roster with freshmen and there is one that is surprisingly listed (WR Dhailon Phillips). I'm not sure if this is a mistake or he will be a late addition if he makes eligibility requirements.

http://www.txstatebobcats.com/roster.aspx?path=football&

Hilariously an incorrect roster unless we were all psyched out on NLI day:
OT Levins on here (with Nevada)
"DT" Brian Parrish on here (even though he signed with UNT)
Brannon listed as IL (?)
Jakharious Smith listed as OL! (?)
Janson Moore still on roster (?)
Logan Peterson on here (signed with FAU)
Now I know why Dhailon Phillips in on here... someone obviously got the wrong info and doesn't follow TXST football at all!

Other likely real updates:
C Reece Jordan listed at 265ish
DL Gjemar Daniels 5'11/315, really like he's going to play DE???? Right...
DT Caeveon Patton 6'2/276 (I still think he plays big DE)
NT Sami Awad (I think if Awad, Daniels, and Lilly can hold down NT, we'll see Lanza/Patton more at DE next season... just a guess)
OT Anthony Mayes Jr. (something tells me that at 6'5/320, he'll be playing guard due to Withers comments recently about not having any starting guards after spring)
OT Caleb Carlile 6'5/305 (if York was right, he'll be competing for PT at guard this year)
QB Jaylin Nelson 5'9/195 (Yup, see for yourself... listed at QB... last tweet from Elliott tweeted "J, J, Ki, Willie J" so that clued me this may happen)
WR/DB Kordell Rogers 6'0/162 (most athletic in the 2017 class is what he is, I think he'll be used at WR personally... too much talent to be at DB... but at 6'0, may be hard not to want him on CB, either way expect him on kickoffs)

Could it be Taxman running txstatebobcats? I haven't heard a lot from him lately, maybe he's working a lot of overtime over at Jackson Hewitt this time of year

This reminds me just how much it stung where the solid recruits that deommitted fell...8 of them that decommitted were either on the line or WR, where we currently struggle the most. Talk about terrible blows...now we can keep the talley rolling with Connor and York also at need positions so then I guess 10 guys now

I know it sucks to have players de-commit but I wouldn't suggest worrying about players that decided to go elsewhere. They did it, not our staff. For 10 guys, I can name you 10 guys that never did anything here like 3* S Summers (quit), 3* DT Hopkins (left program after transferring from UH), 3* DE Kingsley (quit after transferring from Purdue), 2* QB Moore (quit), 2* WR Woodland (ineligible to play, quit to go pro, then rumor was trying to come back), and the list can go on. My point is players decide where they go and when we do get some with talent or star talent... some make it and others are busts.

With respect to the new rosters, it's sad to see that the AD's office is still achieving "below expectations" which is worse than "no expectations".

I looked up Kingsley and he ended up quitting at Purdue.

I'm working on two tv shows and a movie coming up, don't have much time to come on here and listen to negativity and misinformation all day.

Interesting because he transferred here supposedly to be closer to family person that was ill and did practice with team (supposedly) and then someone noted he "quit". Maybe he quit and just attended TXST but that is not what I remember as he sat out the transfer year I believe on the team.

It's a darn shame we didn't offer at Jett Duffey. I really hope we have a decent QB in Williams or Gipson but Tyler Robinson would have made all the more sense if he came with Duffey. Otherwise, I'm worried his crazy highlights were just fluffed with Duffey as his QB

So lets discuss the PWOs.

Why do you think we added so many?
Last year, we added 2 PWOs that we were aware of (C Fryrear and Guard Williams) with just up to 3-4 months to add players over summer. This year its 16 high school players and 4 transfer PWOs (3 practiced this spring).

How many total ship players on roster?
Currently, my count on total ships on current spring roster is 71 (not counting McDowell, Guidry, Berry, or Willie Williams that already transferred to Lamar this spring). Some of those guys will be graduate transfers like McDowell, possibly Berry and Guidry (not sure if Guidry but a guess). If we are at 71 right now, add Tupe and Rogers over summer is my guess (guess they'll take McDowell and possibly one other ship either available now or Berry.. maybe). If so, that will be 73 total ships and 85-73 equals 12 ships still left and I believe these cannot be put into the recruiting classes of 2018 or 2019 directly. Personally, I'm still expecting players like Luna and Ripley to earn ships for this upcoming season but its a total guess.

Back to PWOs: Why would so many consider TXST instead of going either JC or DI-AA?
Opportunity to earn one of those possible double digit ships still open.
RB: We'll have 4 returners (no seniors) with Smith coming in. Depth on practice squad is necessary and with Longbotham only other RB, good to have talent at position.
OL: We'll not have 1 graduating senior at this position. These two will again help with depth on practice squad with Fryrear and Williams. Again, they may be able to earn a ship but they will have to earn it.
WR: We still need depth and practice players. We only added 3 plus transfer TV Williams eligible now. Only having 8-9 WRs with Kordell Rogers listed as WR/DB, we still need more depth and this is not counting WR Luna at this time.
TE: Adding 2 adds to practice squad. There is likely more opportunity here than other positions but gotta earn it under Withers.
DL: To have 4 PWOs added tells me we need better talent on practice squad. They'll get their chance but many are undersized by height or weight.
LB/OLB: Adding 3 again for practice squad is important. Pretty deep on paper at these positions but again need better talent on practice squad.
CB: 1-2 and again practice squad depth. We do need more help here so there is opportunity.
S: Another position that needs help. Opportunity is there.

Basically, I see it as we need better talent on practice squad and they'll get opportunities to earn PT/ship but it won't be most of these guys.

Either way, I do believe talent on practice squads helps teams win. Consider the talent Bama is able to put on field. They only get better with good talent to compete with. Assuming they are Wither's type of guys, I would expect hard work and love football or they won't last long.

Why would they prefer to be PWO here instead of going to JC or FCS? Maybe the TXST brand is growing and kids want to be a part of it, scholarship or not?

Realistically though most kids go to JC because they didn't get an FBS offer. These kids have an opportunity to play FBS football while going to a real university. Sucks that they have to pay to play but the scholarship opportunity is there.
