Post Spring 2017 Roster
With Spring practice coming soon, it seemed like a good time to post this. The football roster updated, here are some notable changes:

Non-graduation related departures:

OL Will Copa
ATH LG Williams
CB Clarence Guidry III
S Camyron Brown
QB Eddie Printz
QB Connor White
QB Tanner Hodges
WR PJ Anderson
OL Austin Closs
NT Joshua Uluocha
DE Cody Casey
LS Inoke Langi
RB Jericho Worrell
OLB Karee' Berry
OL Willie Williams
QB Daegan Haehn
ILB Caleb Moses

Position Shifts:

Darrell Antwine OLB -> DL
JaMorris Martin OLB -> DL
Makeveon Colemen S -> OLB
Jeff Banks TE -> DE (originally TE)
Clifton Lewis OLB -> ILB
Gavin Graham OLB -> ILB
AJ Krawcywz(?) WR -> S
Rob Brown WR -> RB (originally RB)

New Additions:

QB Joseph Gonzales - 2016 Walk On (Redshirted)
QB Janson Moore - 2017 Walk On -- A&M QB
RB Samuel Longbotham - ??? ( Redshirted in 2016 apparently) -- Mary Hardin
WR Dennis Johnson - 2017 Walkon?? -- Dodge City CC
DE Steven Grimes - 2017 Walk on

Additional Notes:

This is Kaspar Level of attrition.
I don't know if that roster is complete, it seems a little small IMO. I also don't know if some guys actually quit they graduated early.
A lot of the walk ons that were listed on last yrs roster were red shirted. Maybe for the best, as a lot of them fit the body requirements for their positions. For example: Grant Sandercox, OLB is 6'1 230 lbs. we'll see.
RBs Robert Brown and Stedman Mayberry gained weight. Rob is 200 lbs and Stedman is 195. In the summer they were 175 lbs and 189 lbs, respectively. OT Josiah Washington also bulked up. He is listed as 305 pounds, up from 290. Aaron Brewer is only 270 lbs?
it seems that Withers has cleansed this program of most of Fran's guys that weren't good at all.
I don't know how to feel about this new roster at all. Like Withers said, we have a lot of guards and not enough tackles. Also the Nose Tackle spot is small. Lily dropped 10 lbs apparently. Down from 270 to 260.

What do you all think? Here's the official roster: http://www.txstatebobcats.com/roster.as ... obile=skip

Let me know if I missed anything.

Post Re: Spring 2017 Roster
OL Will Copa - (concussions history and seizure last Jan)
ATH LG Williams (concussions history)
CB Clarence Guidry III
S Camyron Brown
QB Eddie Printz - we know why the QBs left
QB Connor White
QB Tanner Hodges
WR PJ Anderson
OL Austin Closs
NT Joshua Uluocha
DE Cody Casey
LS Inoke Langi (may be related to Jake (uncle) leaving but that's lame IMHO)
RB Jericho Worrell
OLB Karee' Berry - Academically a Senior - likely grad related

The rest would be conspiracy speculation at best

Keff checking around

Here are my comments:

OL Will Copa (not surprising at CatMom noted)
ATH LG Williams (same as CatMom on him)
CB Clarence Guidry III (he doesn't fit a 34D CB on island)
S Camyron Brown (never in 2 seasons made 2-deep)
QB Eddie Printz (went pro- wondering if we can get his ship back since 1) he already graduated and 2) he left for pro opportunity)
QB Connor White (grad transfer???, if so we get ship back for 2018 class = winning)
QB Tanner Hodges (don't care)
WR PJ Anderson (team rules was rumor)
OL Austin Closs (walk-on, nuff said)
NT Joshua Uluocha (heard he quit)
DE Cody Casey (remember DL coach mic'd up calling him out during season so I'm not surprised he's gone)
LS Inoke Langi (those blocked field goals were deep snapper Inoke getting blasted into backfield... just saying... now he's gone)
RB Jericho Worrell (not sure why he leaves unless he goes DI-AA)
OLB Karee' Berry (I'm guessing he'll graduate early and if so We get ship back like McDowell for 2018)

Position Shifts:
Darrell Antwine OLB -> DL (need bodies)
JaMorris Martin OLB -> DL (not surprised of move.... was at 6'4/240 last year)
Makeveon Colemen S -> OLB (not too surprised based on his size)
Jeff Banks TE -> DE (originally TE); (let's see if he can crack 2 deep/spare role)
Clifton Lewis OLB -> ILB (wow on his size, now I know why we didn't addd another ILB in c2017 class)
Gavin Graham OLB -> ILB (he added 15lbs so not surprising)
AJ Krawcywz(?) WR -> S (need depth here and Rosemond is listed officially as S too)
Rob Brown WR -> RB (originally RB); not much to say about this.

New Additions:

QB Daegan Haehn - Kansas Transfer (sat out last yr)
QB Joseph Gonzales - 2016 Walk On (Redshirted)
QB Janson Moore - 2017 Walk On -- A&M QB
RB Samuel Longbotham - ??? ( Redshirted in 2016 apparently) -- Mary Hardin
WR Dennis Johnson - 2017 Walkon?? -- Dodge City CC
DE Steven Grimes - 2017 Walk on

Additional Notes:

This is Kaspar Level of attrition.(incorrect; Kaspar couldn't keep his own players; so far Withers has kept his signees)
I don't know if that roster is complete, it seems a little small IMO. I also don't know if some guys actually quit they graduated early. (Some did quit from what I understand)
A lot of the walk ons that were listed on last yrs roster were red shirted. Maybe for the best, as a lot of them fit the body requirements for their positions. For example: Grant Sandercox, OLB is 6'1 230 lbs. we'll see. (Some may earn ships in next year or so; think Watts, Rubin, AJ)
(All I can say is that Burkhart gets these guys in weight they are asked to be in from some dropping weight and others adding up to 30 lbs... I don't believe DE Taylor is 280 which means he's added 50 lbs but I wouldn't entirely cross it out as possible)
it seems that Withers has cleansed this program of most of Fran's guys that weren't good at all. (Not entirely true but I know what you mean but he got rid of non-committed players that were Frans)
I don't know how to feel about this new roster at all. Like Withers said, we have a lot of guards and not enough tackles. Also the Nose Tackle spot is small. Lily dropped 10 lbs apparently. Down from 270 to 260. (Agree and he said as much at spring signing day; he's added 3 OTs to this point in 2017 class; I expect Mattie to get reps at NT this spring due to need; and we are more thin in depth now compared to last year; I like our size again compared to last spring).

All in all, we have last years freshmen bigger including walk-ons; returners go bigger; and I do expect to see some new offensive scheme OL strategies from DL Coach Mateos from Arkansas/LSU. Expect to run ball a lot this spring and throw enough.

I think this spring will be a success if we can run the ball better. Don't expect miracles but improvement.

I'm just excited to have Tyler out. Nothing against him but things just never seemed to go smoothly. I'm hoping we find someone who can lead this team.

Post Re: Spring 2017 Roster
Lets take another look a this roster that was put out while I was out and many of you know I like knowing the roster.

QB:
D. Williams is listed at 215 which seems to indicate we didn't want him too bulky as he was listed at 229 at MSU.
Rest are likely to backup spring and would need to show lot to become #2 by end of fall practices, in my opinion.

RB:
Every RB is between 195 to 215. I'm not sure Tutt will be participating but that gives Robert Brown and A. Taylor opportunities.

OL:
Nothing to surprising other than what was noted earlier about Brewer listed at 270 (sounds to me we want him more agile/versatile/quicker) but another is Jaquel Pierce listed at 285 compared to 255 last year. Vatterot has also gained size from listed 265 last year to now 290. We have 5 guards and only 3 OTs. Will be interesting to see which 2 OTs end spring starting... be default or by impressing.

TE:
Schrade seems to have added 10lbs from last season (230ish) while Rushing did as well from 215 to 235, which is pretty big for Rushing considering he's the only ship TE coming back for 2018 season. Hopefully the added size can help Schrade block way better as it was a weakness of his game last season.

WR:
This is usually not a position that you want WRs to gain too much weight but you like to see they've gotten stronger and able to get of line of scrimmage against a DB/S/LB. Morbley seems to have added 5-10 lbs as I believe he was 170ish last year and now is 180. Rest seem about the same but we know King and Luna are possession type receivers while Hays, Watts, TV Williams will need their speed.

DL:
I figured Lilly would be bigger than 260 but maybe that is the size he'll be the most effective at DT/NT while Lanza will give DT position an interesting look at 6'4/270. As we know, DT/NT is quite thin so I do expect Mittie to get some reps there, especially if its true that Taylor is 280 now. If so, WOW. Going from 230 o 280 after one season is something. Again, small DL this spring but come fall practices we add some much needed size. Can Banks show anything to be competitive or is this just a spring need due to lack of depth ala TE was last year for Banks. We'll see.

OLB:
Hines from 208 last year to 225 is a big jump but I'm not too surprised as he had the frame to put on the additional weight. I think one OLB position is his to lose likely against Coleman and Griffin. The other is Anyama with Vinson, who added more size to 240 from his 220 from last year.

ILB:
This may be the most exciting position to watch. Enter depth with Graham and Lewis at 225. These two with Daniels to back up Loyd and London should be fun to watch. The ability to have up to 6 guys (including Brannon) will be huge for next season.

CB:
CB jobs are open for the taking... who will go get them? Easling would see a likely candidate for 1 position while the other is up for grabs with 2 coming this fall. Aneke has yet to take a spot so Waddy and Taylor have a great opportunity.

S:
Johnson lost his job last season so he definitely needs to step his game up while others like Tiggs and Rosemond have yet to take a position/spot... now is their best opportunity. AJ Krawczyk has moved from WR to S so we'll see if he can make a push to be in the rotation.

K:
Ripley and Sherman are only guys on roster so both need to impress or hope coaching staff can find a few others that walk-on or blueshirt a guy before fall semester begins.

Yes, thin roster.
Yes, lack of experience roster (due to size/ability) at certain positions (QB, WR, OL, DL, CB, S)
Yes, there will not likely be a spring game; rather, a scrimmage.
Yes, we should expect improvements this spring even if they are small improvements

Remember, last year we discovered Loyd, London, Anyama, Mittie, DE Davis and others could play at either new positions or period. Who could that be this season? Taylor, Rushing, TV Williams, Damien Williams, Robert Brown, Coleman... should be fun finding out and I do hope there is 1-2 OL we like coming out of spring that is not named Brewer or Mizerak.
