His decommitment definitely looks like it’s on Texas State’s side rather than him looking elsewhere. Need a big body and probably two for the DL. Schaefer and Lynch are the only two and both DEs. Lynch maybe a LB. Hopefully DL and LB are a priority for the remaining spots. Those two are the only ones for the front 7 on D in this class right now.

By the way, Blinn JC DE Cullen Wick committed to Tulsa... which I figured would happen since he never visited TXST.

Javiar Wade enjoyed his visit. I'm a little surprised with just a DI-AA offer that he didn't commit.

With the number 90 on his photo, seems it will be at DE.

Seeing his number is making me wonder if Jake Lynch (photo he took had #36) is going to be a DE as previously noted by Keff when he committed or will he be a OLB. Interesting.

Agreed on the DL situation and this decommit. I can't imagine going into 2018 with DE Davis 270, Hines 235, Schaefer 240, and Lynch 230. Nope... need more size at DE in a 3-4 D. I could see Lynch moved to OLB and/or a specialist on 3rd downs.. which hopefully moves Hines to what I feel is his true position... OLB with Vinson. I think we need immediate (JC DE/DT) type help to ensure no issues if a player goes down like this year (Davis out, Taylor missed 2-3 games and Banks as well to concussion protocol, FR broke leg before season, Lanza was hurt, and Hines was in and out at end of season). Depth is needed and I'm thinking 2 spots may be needed be it DT/NT and DE.

I like to watch our coaches and who they are "following" on twitter. Most recently, I've seen a few more JC DL listed on a few coaches so I do expect them to be considered. Most of the new ones listed having high GPAs so they don't seem to be grade risks and video is pretty good. We'll see if any visit this weekend or in following weeks.

decommit: Peyton Fifield.

With this being the 2nd decommit in a few days, what do you guys think is going on here? Just grade issues? Possibly coaches telling guys to look elsewhere and plan to use the remaining spots for JUCO or other recruits?

Just interested if anyone has a clue (other than that just being the recruiting game).

I don't know any specifics but there can be multiple things:

-Kid is hearing from another school and/or offered and plans to visit/commit on visit
-Grades
-Coaches looking another direction due to needs (remember, we had major issues on DL in last 3 games... using a Guard as NT, and I think burning a redshirt Freshmen)

Remember, this is a whole new thing. Those P5 coaches that don't like this new early signing process don't have those 2nd and 3rd options anymore if they signed early so they will have to sign their 3rd or 4th option. Trickle down. A&M takes away a 3* from Ark St. and they go after one of ours type thing is something that can happen.

All of this is new territory for coaches and all should have plan B, C, and D for someone like us... TXST.

We'll know more once we start hearing how plans to visit be it JC players or freshmen.

For what it is worth, Keff tweeted near the end of early signing day that these two would not be signing with Texas State, then deleted that tweet minutes later.

Did he now... Interesting.

That intrigue still has me thinking 2 DL at minimum 1 JC DT/DE is needed to help Davis on that side of DL. Considering injuries on that side, wouldn't mind 3 DT, NT, DE but we have many positions still need to be filled by depth (My guesses: 1-2 C/OG, 2 DL, 1-2 ILB, 1-2 CB, and maybe 1 S) anything else is needed depth.

I feel he must fill voids with these last 10 (3 verbals still) so its really 7 ships. We cannot use excuse of too thin on ships in his 3rd season. If he does, he had room to fill voids but didn't. I too am growing impatient and expect better in year 3.

That is interesting about Keff. I missed that.

just going off of the identical wording of their tweets re: open to all schools, one has to think that's the coaches cutting them loose and encouraging them to look elsewhere.

I’m not sure I’d try to interpret a 18-19 year old words...

Remember when Costilla tweeted something along the lines of recruiting him then not taking his commitment a 2nd time? Now he’s committed to Blinn JC. He goes JC.

My point being that they could be saying ALL schools, including JCs. We won’t know until they sign elsewhere.

We just know they aren’t coming to San Marvelous so let’s find out who will be in coming weeks.

Not sure if this confirms but someone asked Keff if it was grades and Keff tweeted eyes:

Not that it matters, but Costilla is commited to tyler not Blinn.

you really expect withers to come up with 7 brand new pledges in the next 3 weeks that arent just warm bodies? you must have been watching some other guy coach the last 24 months. at this late in the game ill be impressed if he completes the class with 7 warm bodies much less anyone that is going to help us win right away next season. never expect coach to ever put the excuse card away. at least when sumlin was pulling out the excuse card it was for 8-9 wins... withers will be using his card for 3-4 wins

In this case, I agree with phratcat. I don't see us signing anyone in this period that is going to be a difference maker next season.

But, I will be happy if we can get some guys that won't be embarrassed next season if they are forced into duty.

I would think it is unlikely (and probably a bit unreasonable) to expect us to grab someone who will be a major contributor if we haven't already offered him and had him targeted already.

Doesn't mean it CAN'T happen, but I'm not expecting it.

I usually don't agree with Phrat and this won't be the day it changes.

I can agree that signing 7 impact players is highly unlikely. I'd even argue we likely won't sign 7 others. A guy like Hutch White may have earned himself a ship whether you think he's good enough or not. Any other PWOs earn a ship, I don't know.

I'm not asking any position player we bring in to come in a beat out the starter. I've specifically noted we need depth. No more of having to move players like London to OLB on 3rd downs due to injuries on DL. No more moving OLBs to DE due to injuries. We need depth and if that is a JC DL or Freshmen DL, so be it. Same at CB, maybe TE, maybe OL (only 4 signed), and others.

I am HOPING we take as many players as we are allowed, if for no other reason than we need to get to a full squad.

But yeah, finding some guys that can end up providing decent depth in 2019 or 2020 is not AT ALL out of reach for that.

If we give out some schollies to players that have earned it? I'm totally ok with that.
