Post challenge for those of you down on the coach for the w/l
please list all of the g5 coaches in the last 5 years that:

1) won 10 games at any point during those 5 years
2) took over a team with a losing record the previous season
3) have not had a season with fewer wins than the season before they took over

for ease of discovery: http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/conferences

curious to see what you come up with, as i got about 6 in before giving up. charlie strong at louisville was the only one i found.

I'm certainly down on Withers, but I haven't given up. He gets this year and next to do with as he pleases.

Still, one ironic answer to your question is Dennis Franchionne, who inherited a 4-7 team from Brad Wright and immediately went 6-6 while also stepping up the competition in a transition year. You might remember the unbelievable lack of talent we had then. Shaun Rutherford anybody? Maybe he wasn't technically a "G5" coach then, but details.

[EDIT] OK so I wrote this while having my first cup of coffee and never read your rules completely... The point is Fran went 6-6 his first year after inheriting a 4 win team and increasing the competition we were playing against. How the hell did we win a game with Shaun Rutherford!? He couldn't throw the ball 30 yards.

Neal Brown at Troy will meet this criteria in just 2 years time as long as they win two out of the next four of Ark St, TXST, GaSo, and bowl game.

QFT.

not true. fran coached against an fcs schedule w/ 11 more scholarships to go 6-6 in 2011. against an fbs schedule in 2012, he went 4-8.

Then he went 6-6 and 7-5 against FBS teams.

Urban Meyer at Ohio State (went 12-0 in 2012 after 5-7 Luke Fickell season prior)
Jim Harbaugh at Michigan (went 10-3 last year after 5-7 Brady Hoke season prior)
Gus Malzahn at Auburn (went 12-2 in 2013 after 3-9 Gene Chizik season prior)
Jim Mora at UCLA (a pair of 10 win seasons after Rick Neuheisel 6-8 2011 season...this season will regress to losing record probably if they don't win out)
Justin Fuente at Memphis (10-3 in 2014 after going 4-8, 3-9 after 2-10 Larry Porter season)
Rich Rodriguez at Arizona (will drop off list after losing season this year)
Hugh Freeze at Ole Miss (Houston Nutt went 2-10 in 2011, Freeze went 7-6, 8-5, 9-4, 10-3 since...may drop this year though)
Todd Graham at Arizona State (two 10 win seasons in 4 years since taking over 6-7 Dennis Erickson team, but regressed to 6-7 last year which technically qualifies for criteria #3)

Just missed:

Charlie Strong at Louisville (needs 6 years back, not 5)
Darrell Hazell at Kent State (needs 6 years back, went same 5-7 as prior coach followed by 11-2)
Matt Rhule at Temple (regressed to 2-10 after 4-7 Steve Addazio prior coach, but got 10 wins in 2015)
Mike MacIntyer at San Jose State (needs 6 years back and regressed to 1-12 from Dick Tomey's 2-10 season prior to his hire, but then went 5-7, and 11-2...now doing great at CU and actually looks to do same there with 2 more wins...regressed year two at CU, too)
Hugh Freeze again but at Arkansas State (needs 6 years back, went 10-3 in only season after 4-8 prior to arrival)
Tim DeRuyter at Fresno State (took over Pat Hill 4-9 team, two years later 11-2 but regressed to 6-8, 3-9, 1-7 and fired)
P.J. Fleck at Western Michigan (regressed to 1-11 in first season from 4-8 season prior to arrival)

May make it after this season:

Phillip Montgomery at Tulsa (needs 3 wins in 3/4 games, including bowl)

none of these are g5, but on target otherwise:
Urban Meyer at Ohio State (went 12-0 in 2012 after 5-7 Luke Fickell season prior)
Jim Harbaugh at Michigan (went 10-3 last year after 5-7 Brady Hoke season prior)
Gus Malzahn at Auburn (went 12-2 in 2013 after 3-9 Gene Chizik season prior)
Jim Mora at UCLA (a pair of 10 win seasons after Rick Neuheisel 6-8 2011 season...this season will regress to losing record probably if they don't win out)
Rich Rodriguez at Arizona (will drop off list after losing season this year)
Hugh Freeze at Ole Miss (Houston Nutt went 2-10 in 2011, Freeze went 7-6, 8-5, 9-4, 10-3 since...may drop this year though)
Todd Graham at Arizona State (two 10 win seasons in 4 years since taking over 6-7 Dennis Erickson team, but regressed to 6-7 last year which technically qualifies for criteria #3)

yes:
Charlie Strong at Louisville (needs 6 years back, not 5) [the 10 wins was w/i the last 5 yrs]
Tim DeRuyter at Fresno State (took over Pat Hill 4-9 team, two years later 11-2 but regressed to 6-8, 3-9, 1-7 and fired) [technically, the regression needs to happen before the 10w mark to disqualify - poor wording on my part]
Justin Fuente at Memphis (10-3 in 2014 after going 4-8, 3-9 after 2-10 Larry Porter season)
Darrell Hazell at Kent State (needs 6 years back, went same 5-7 as prior coach followed by 11-2) [10w was w/i 5yrs &he didn't do worse, so he's in]

there's so many more in that "just missed" category. that's why i quit looking and put out there to you guys! thanks lancer!
