Based on limited interactions with Spavital and his press conferences, it's easy to see why Spavital has been able to climb up the ranks to HC a lot faster. Coaching ability aside (two Heisman winners and a NFL 1st round draft pick this year at QB), at his press conferences, he was open, honest and provided in-depth look at his vision and the coaching discussions that go on behind closed doors. He gave direct answers to direct questions without beating around the bush.

Withers was standoffish most times, hardly ever gave answers to direct questions, and was just generally not very affable. The coaching staff seemed adversarial to each other at times, which may have something to do with the inordinate amount of turnover during his tenure.

Spavital will succeed here and probably go to a P5 or the NFL in two seasons. Solid character guy.

Not a knock on anything youre saying but id say Spavital's history kinda makes it seem like those QB's made him more than he made them. He has made 1 -2 year stints at teams with good QB's already then bolts.

So the verdict is still out on the "this guy succeeds here then bolts" because thats the same talk that was said about Withers.

Not necessarily, he also coached Brandon Weeden (also a 1st round QB) and Geno Smith (early 2nd rounder). One or two quality people is a coincidence, 5-6 of them is a solid pattern to draw from.

On a side note, anyone notice the Texas State Barstool sports page showing a video of Spavital at Chimy's last night? That's not a good look for an $800K coach at a school with losing record in football and a party-image problem.  :? :? :?

Loved the video. I hope he wins and goes to the square after every win.
