Post subject:  Start of the Basketball Season Today

I know we're all caught up with football right now, but the college basketball season tips off today at 3 when Georgia Southern plays at Houston.

The Bobcats' season starts friday in Hawaii against Cal State Fullerton. I know we're all expecting big improvement this year culminating with at least a conference tournament spot, which we haven't been a part of since we lost in the first round of the Southland tournament to SLU in 2005.

Cal State Fullerton will be one of the best teams we play during our OOC schedule. They won the Big West tournament last year and lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament, as a 14 seed, to Wisconsin. They have lost four of their starters but their best player, and perhaps the best player in the Big West, Josh Akognon, returns. Akognon gave serious consideration to bypassing his senior year for the NBA draft, but decided to come back for his senior season. He is probably among the best ten shooters in the country and is considered a serious NBA prospect.
They signed eight new players this year to replace their four lost starters, six of the eight are transfers. This team won 24 games last year and will still be very dangerous this year.

We will get a pretty good idea of how the team has progressed during the off-season from this game (it's kind of hard to gauge the team when we start with Concordia and Huston-Tillotson every year). If we win this game I will be expecting big things this year, if we keep it competitive and can't pull off the win I will still be very optimistic.

Hopefully we can get a gametracker and follow this game Friday before we have to worry about Nicholls on Saturday.

Did a long interview with Coach Davalos over the weekend for the basketball preview for the magazine. He has a lot of good things to say about this team and the experience we have going into this season....for example we have 10 letterman returning...that's almost the whole team. It's been years since we have had that kind of experience as a team going into the season. And as the coach said, there are three kinds of experience...Division 1 basketball experience, Texas State experience and Texas State Team experience and we have all three.
