Post Goldy, Field Get Spring Training Invites
Paul Goldschmidt and Thomas Field will be attending their first big league Spring Training camps this year. The Diamondbacks and Rockies, respectively, have given them non-roster invites. Very doubtful either would break camp with the big club this year, but an honor nonetheless!

Meanwhile, former 'Cat Matt Miller became a minor league free agent in the off-season and has left the Rockies organization but signed on with the Phillies organization. This will be his third Spring Training as a non-roster invitee but he could have an outisde shot at being a 5th outfielder for the Phils.

-- D-backs manager Kirk Gibson has maintained that first baseman Paul Goldschmidt is "in the mix" at first base, but it has been hard to believe that the organization would rush him like that given that he has not played above the Class A level.

Gibson came close to admitting just that today after Goldschmidt pinch-hit and drove in two more runs with a single.

"Probably not," Gibson said about the likelihood of Goldschmidt making the club out of Spring Training. "But I don't really look at it that way. I look at it that we're trying to develop depth as well. We can't predict what may happen, who might get hurt. If there's some guys that go back to the Minor Leagues from here we want them to have great confidence, we want them to shore their game up. We want them to know how we want to do it up here, the things that are important to the Diamondbacks and go down there and be leaders. People can move fast."

Certainly Goldschmidt has opened some eyes with his strong showing thus far.

"From the first day I saw him swing he's made several adjustments," Gibson said. "His swing is shorter and he's staying on the ball. We'll see if he can do it all spring."

From Scout.com

Paul Goldschmidt not only won the 2010 California League MVP and FutureBacks.com Position Player of the Year Award for Visalia, but he was the best position player in the entire organization last season. For an encore, Goldie has had a superlative spring that put him in the running for the Arizona Diamondbacks' opening day roster.

As great as he is doing I can't imagine they put him on the opening day roster. Some of the most talented players skip AAA ball but I think it would be rather rare to skip AA all together.
I think he gets put in AA and if he does really well all season he may make the playoff roster at the end of the year if the Diamondbacks make the playoffs.

I tend to be thinking along those lines, also. Maybe until they have to get down to 25, then, perhaps, when they can bring some up in Sept. (they still do that in Sept, right?)

They've already been sent down to minor league camps, but both Goldschmidt and Field did well, especially Goldy. He could force his way onto AAA to start the year.
