Post Barrick Nealy walks away from pro-football
"Whether it was a case of seeing the writing on the wall or what coach John Hufnagel described as “severe personal problems,” the fact that remains is this: Barrick Nealy is no longer a Calgary Stampeder."

Coach John Hufnagel:
“He just said it was personal, that the game wasn’t fun for him anymore,” said Hufnagel. “He did some soul-searching and he came to this conclusion. He’s had a lot of counsel over the last day and a half, and that’s the situation we’re in right now. We’ll see what happens in the future.”

I hope everything works out for Barrick. He's a genuinely nice guy and certainly one of the best to ever wear the Maroon and Gold...maybe we'll see him back in San Marcos sometime soon.

No, that is reserved for National Championship coaches.

Really wish he had tried something with an NFL team, he clearly still had the wheels as this video shows.

Barrick was with the Minnesota Vikings for a short stint. He wanted to be QB but the club wanted him @ wide receiver. So, he stood by his principles and bolted for Calgary. The rest, as they say, is history.

The URL won't bring up the article anymore, and I know this is an old thread, but can someone fill me in on what is meant by Barrick's "severe personal problems"?

Barrick has no "severe" personal problems. He's a healthy young man with a good job at the San Marcos Baptist Academy, a growing family and a bright future. He is involved in San Marcos community affairs and is an asset to our town.

He has a good side job as a personal trainer and works with a lot of area youth to help them improve their athletic skills, fitness and life balance between athletics and academics.

My wife and I see him and his wife, Tiffany, from time to time. They are doing well.

So what is his coach referring to, I wonder.

Maybe he "personally" disliked being in Canada away from his friends and family.

I think ATXbobcat hits the nail on the head. He very much wanted to be back in Texas and I think he may have seen the handwriting on the wall that the NFL probably was not in his future.

I think maybe Barrick had a better grasp on the reality of his life than his coach did.

I would love to see Nealy get a position coaching position at TXST, maybe make his way up to OC or even HC 10 or 15 years from now. QB coach could be right up his alley since he could teach the same things Tom Herman taught him in the spring/summer before the 2005 season that made him such an awesome QB on the field that year.
