 Undergraduate Academic Center
There is a new map that shows exactly where they intend to build if interested. http://www.fss.txstate.edu/planning/fac ... n/uac.htmlRemember that the area in blue is the building and the black line is fenced in construction zone.

So they are getting rid of the old History building (I can't remember the name of it) and the psych building across the street from it?
I loved those buildings!

I loved those buildings! Oh no, both of those are 'untouchables'. I would probably chain myself to the front of the history building if they went after it. The style and construction of that building is very unusual. The Texas Historic Commission would fry them for even proposing its demolition. This building is not going on the Quad--it is on the southside of Evans, along the same latitude as Commons Dining Hall, Brogdon & Beretta Hall, Jones Dining Hall, etc.

This building is actually a pretty good example of the city and university working together. The placement of this building with the arch creates an excellent visual anchor to terminate Guadalupe Street that will look really nice as you enter San Marcos from I-35 @ Guadalupe. This type of design effort on the edge of downtown was discussed during the University's Campus Master Plan as well as the City's Campus Edge Strategic Plan and Downtown Master Plan. When you look at the great streets of the world, they include strong visual anchors at their ends. Think about how the streets radiate out in Washington, D.C., the placement of cathedrals in Rome, and key historic buildings of Athens. Congress Avenue in AUstin is another great example of this approach. State Street and Hamilton Street in Madison, WI is another cool one. While San Marcos certainly isn't one of those cities, this design element can really improve the appearance and visual interest of an area.

This building is going into the parking lot behind the police station.
Another parking lot gone. Parking is going to be an absolute clusterfrick in the fall.

Just let the lunch ladies and other non-professor folk park at Bobcat stadium and take the tram like the rest of us. Besides, the new garage will be opened up, and some of that is going to be red. I've never seen the campus to have that bad of a parking situation.

Agreed. Before it was the history building, it was the music building. I have family with stories and friends with ties to that building. There's no way that should ever come down.

The University had the History Department offer a course my first year in grad school that consisted of doing a historical survey of campus for the Master Plan. As you can imagine, the history nerds refused to watch our building go away. In fact, they just spent a bunch of money rehabing the courtyard. It now has a running fountain, benches, and a lot of plant life.

 Re: Undergraduate Academic Center
The campus is so radically different from what it was when I was there. Of course, nearly all of the changes have been for the better, but it's been bittersweet for me to see so much of what I knew get torn down -- my old dorm (Buckner), Speck, old Harris, and other central campus dorms, among them. Still, like I said, most of the changes have been for the better. One example: the library now sits where there was a huge surface parking lot stretching upward from Jones to Jackson -- certainly not a pretty sight, even if it made for good sledding when it snowed (especially the big 1985 snow). The library was in the first master plan implemented just as I graduated. Now they're in the middle of the second. But they've kept a lot of the really historic central buildings that gave the old campus character, and I like that. Plus, a lot of the new buildings are interesting architecturally.
