I grew up down the street from Garland when they lived in town. Blake and I were running buddies in elementary school and Garland let my father and I fish his stock ponds out off Center Point Rd. I remember him standing in our home on the day my father passed away suddenly in 1975. He told my mother "if there is anything I can ever do, please do not hesitate to ask". That stuck with me as I knew it was a promise and not an empty statement. Garland would always go out of his way to shake my hand or say hello. I had a similar life changing event that forever changed my life and my walk with the lord. I consider myself blessed for having known Garland and I am thankful that the Lord called us both out and set us on a new walk...

I knew Garland from North Texas, and we were members of the Kappa Alpha fraternity. I remember him as a guy that had the determination and will of a freight train. It never surprised me that Garland became a wealthy and respected man. While a student at North Texas, he owned his own construction business, taught a PE course and played on the football team. I always wondered how he found time to sleep. Glad I able to keep in touch with his daughter, Cheryl, via email just before he died. She was kind enough to relay some of my messages to him during his last days.

Thank you for that article. It brought back memories of my time with Uncle Garland. As one of his nieces I watched as God used him to work thru others. He touched my life in so many ways and I still feel him with me! I loved and respected him so much!

The school rebranded itself as 'Texas State'. Yes, the full name of the school is 'Texas State University - San Marcos', but that's not what comes out of your mouth when a friend asks you what school you're going to.

There's four major terms that state universities use in their names.

1. U of ___
2. __ Tech
3. __ A&M
4. __ State

With the re-branding, the school grabbed the last of these four. It's pulling the university up the ladder in name alone. It doesn't mean the school is any different immediately, but there have already been results in the first six years. Enrollment, revenue, brand awareness, we're even headed for the WAC, something that was out of the question 10 years ago.

'Texas State'. Three syllables. That's how ESPN commentators and alumni will refer to the school. TXST is the most direct abbreviation, and avoids any possible confusion with Texas Southern - Even now, after attending Texas State for years, I associate TSU with Southern, not State.

Oh, and TXST looks way better than TSU or TXSU. It's nearly symmetrical. TXXT. Regardless of what your personal opinion is, this is the direction we're going in. And it's the right one.
