Texas State head men’s basketball coach Doug Davalos has announced the signing of four players for the 2010-11 season. The Bobcats signed Nick Hinton from Wakeland High School in Frisco, Texas, Stevie Rogers of Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Conn., Travis Jones of Lon Morris College, and Reid Koenen of Prairie School High School in Racine, Wis. Those players will join mid-year transfer Matt Staff as new players on Texas State’s roster in 2010-11.

“This is one of the most monumental recruiting years in Texas State basketball history,” said Davalos. “This class has a similar feel that our 2007 class had when we signed Cameron Johnson, Ryan White, Jonathan Sloan, Corey Jefferson and Brent Benson.

Hinton is a 6’ 9” forward who is listed as one of the Top 24 high school players by Texas Hoops after averaging 16.2 points and 7.2 rebounds and 2.6 blocked shots per game at Wakeland for coach Brent Benningfield.

“Nick is a talented and versatile left-handed forward who has a soft touch and is an effective scorer inside the paint or on the perimeter,” said Davalos. “His ability to shoot the three coupled with his size and athleticism makes him a very special player. He also is a versatile defender, productive rebounder, runs the floor well and can flourish in the transition game.”

Rogers is a 5’11” guard who attended Choate after playing at Strake Jesuit High School in Houston. He ranked as one of the Top 12 players in Connecticut this past season while averaging 17 points, 8 assists and three steals per game for coach Adam Finkelstein. He also was named an All-Western New England First-Team selection in 2009-10.

“Stevie is a pure point guard, who can be a catalyst on offense and defense,” Davalos said. “He is extremely quick and effective in the open floor and a solid decision maker when directing the offense in the half court. His ability to knock down the three-point shot combined with his quickness and decision making makes him very hard to guard.”

Jones is a 6’7” guard who averaged 14.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 0.9 steals per game at Lon Morris for coach Dale Dotson after attending Georgetown High School.

“Travis has played in one of the toughest junior college regions in the country and should be prepared to be an immediate impact player for us,” Davalos said. “He has outstanding ability to shoot or slash to the basket from the wing. He also is a very versatile defender and an above average rebounder from the guard position. He has a very good feel for the game and can play both guard positions.”

Koenen is a 6’7” forward who was named to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association’s All-Star team after being selected Honorable-Mention All-State by the Associated Press. He also was named to the All-Racine County team and was the Player of the Year in the Midwest Classic Conference. He averaged 19.6 points, 9.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.5 blocked shots per game as a senior for coach Lance Marifke. As a junior, Koenen averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead Racine County in both categories.

“Reid is a very skilled player on the wing, and has tremendous range as a three-point shooter,” Davalos said. “He can really handle and pass the ball. His length, skill and athletic ability make him a very unique player. As he gains some strength and adjusts to the college game, he is going to be an outstanding player.”

Staff transferred to Texas State in January after playing in six games at New Mexico last fall. He played at Memorial High School, where he was an All-District and All-Region First-Team selections after averaging 19 points, 13.7 rebounds and 3.8 assists as a senior for Dave Lay.

“Matt has already impacted our program as a practice player,” said Davalos. “He is a 6’9” forward who has guard-like skills as a passer and shooter. His footwork, athleticism, competitiveness and versatility will allow him to contribute at multiple positions.”

These recruits joins Texas State’s roster after the Bobcats posted a 15-16 overall record and finished with the fifth-best record in the Southland Conference with a 9-7 mark.

“Each of these players have similar characteristics in that they are very skilled, intelligent and talented basketball players,” Davalos concluded. “They also are very conscientious students and great human beings raised by wonderful parents. We are very excited about the 2010-11 season.”

On a day when Texas State honored its 1960 national championship team and two senior players, the men’s basketball team came from behind to defeat Sam Houston State 101-97 in overtime on Saturday afternoon in Strahan Coliseum.

The Bobcats honored senior John Rybak and Emmanuel Bidias A’ Moute in a pre-game ceremony and celebrated the 50-year anniversary for its 1960 NAIA national championship team at halftime before the Bobcats overcame a 10-point deficit in the second half to record the victory. It is the second time in the last three years that Texas State has defeated a Southland Conference champion in a final regular season game. In addition to Saturday’s win over this year’s SLC regular-season champion, Texas State defeated UT Arlington, 97-86, to end the 2007-08 regular season.

Rybak and Bidias A’ Moute responded by combining for 41 points, 14 rebounds, six assists and four steals for the Bobcats. In addition to the two seniors, Ryan White scored his career-high of 19 points and handed out a team-high six assists, while Uriel Segura added 10 points and five assists for the Bobcats.

Rybak scored 25 points to lead the Bobcats, and his back to-back three-point field goals put the Bobcats in front 83-81 with 3:13 left to play in the second half.

Two and one-half minutes later, the Bearkats came back to tie the score at 84-84 with 51 seconds left before Cameron Johnson, who finished with 13 points and eight rebounds, made a pair of free throws to give the Bobcats a two-point lead.

On Sam Houston State’s next possession, Corey Allmond nailed a three-pointer from the top of the key to give the Bearkats an 87-86 lead with 12 seconds remaining.

On Texas State’s next possession, Ryan White missed a lay-up, but the Bobcats regained the offensive rebound. The ball was inbounded to Rybak who was fouled by Sam Houston State’s Josten Crow with four-tenths of a second left in regulation. Rybak made his first free throw to tie the score, but his second rolled off the left side of the rim to send the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, Rybak stole Preston Brown’s pass and drove the length of the court to give the Bobcats an 89-87 lead. Texas State never trailed again in the game.

After Crow made one of his two free throws, Uriel Segura hit Bidias A’ Moute for a lay-up with 3:09 left to play.

The Bobcats regained possession, but Crow stole a pass from Segura and drove down the court for a slam dunk to pull the Bearkats back to within one, but Rybak answered with another free throw. Then, he grabbed the rebound off of a missed shot by Lance Pevehouse and hit White for a lay-up to put the Bobcats up 94-90 with 1:30 left in the overtime period.

When Allmond missed a jumper from the top of the key, the Bobcats regained possession and Pevehouse fouled White, who made both of his free throws.

Sam Houston State closed the lead back to three when Ashton Mitchell hit Allmond for another trey with 45 seconds left to play. However, Pevehouse fouled White in the backcourt again, and White made another pair of free throws.

Mitchell made two free throws to pull the Bearkats back to within 98-85, before Segura made one of his two free throws to extend Texas State’s lead back to four.

Gilberto Clavell, who led both teams with35 points, grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled by Bidias A’ Moute. He made both of his free throws before he fouled White with four seconds left to play. White clinched the victory when he made his two free throws to make the final score 101-97.

The win clinches at a fifth-place finish in the Southland Conference standings for Texas State, which ends the regular season with a 15-15 overall record and a 9-7 SLC mark this season. The Bobcats will play Southeastern Louisiana in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament on Wednesday, Mar. 10 at 9:00 p.m.

The 15 wins give Texas State its most wins in a single season under head coach Doug Davalos and gives the Bobcats their highest win total since 2002-03 when Texas State won 17 games. The nine SLC wins also are the most by a Bobcat team since 2002-03 when Texas State had an 11-9 SLC record.

Cameron Johnson scored 19 points to lead Texas State as he was one of four Bobcats to score in double figures. Ryan White added 16 points and three assists despite suffering an ankle injury midway in the first half. Tony Bishop came off the bench to net 11 and John Bowman added 10 points for the Bobcats, who improved their overall record to 12-13 and their Southland Conference mark to 6-5.

The victory also was Texas State’s 10th win at home this year. It gives the Bobcats two straight seasons with double digit victories in Strahan Coliseum. Texas State won 11 home games in 2008-09. This marks the second time in school history that the Bobcats have won double-digit home games two seasons in a row.

Lamar was led by Anthony Miles, who scored a game-high 23 points, while Kendrick Harris added 15 points. No other Cardinal scored in double figures as Lamar was held to 36.4 percent (20-55) shooting from the field, and 37.5 percent (6-16) from beyond the three-point arc. The Cardinals fell to 14-12 overall and 5-5 in Southland Conference action.

Texas State shot 42.9 percent (27-63) from the field, including 60 percent (18-30) in the second half. Both teams made 70 percent (21-30) of their free throw attempts.

Johnson scored 17 of his points in the second half, and White added 13 of his point total in the second period as the Bobcats held a 25-23 lead at halftime despite shooting just 27 percent from the field overall and making just two of their 10 three-point attempts in the opening period. The Bobcats were able to maintain a lead in the opening period by holding Lamar to just 31 percent shooting from the field and forcing 11 turnovers.

The Bobcats led 32-30 with 16:10 left to play when Texas State took control of the game with a 15-0 run during the next six minutes. Johnson led the Bobcats during the rally as he scored five points and hit Bishop for a jumper in the paint and Bowman for a dunk shot off a steal. Bishop added another lay-up off an offensive rebound and White nailed a three-point shot.

Texas State led 47-30 after a pair of free throws by Johnson before Stan Brown and Kendrick Harris combined to make three of their four free throws to end the run.

But, the Bobcats extended their lead to 22 when Dylan Hale hit John Rybak for a three-point shot, Johnson scored on a three point play after grabbing an offensive rebound and making a lay-up and free throw after being fouled on the play.

That resulted in Lamar’s head coach Steve Roccaforte storming out on the court and receiving a technical foul. Ryan White made one of the two free throws to give Texas State a 55-33 lead with 9:19 left in the game.

Johnson’s dunk shot on a fast break with 4:44 left to play gave the Bobcats their biggest lead in the game at 70-45.

Lamar used some timely three-point shooting to try and climb back into the game. First, Anthony Miles scored a four-point play when he made a three-point shot from the right wing and was fouled by Rybak on the play. He made the free throw.

After Donte Lopez made a three-point shot with 3:43 left to play, he scored another four-point play with a three-pointer and free throw after being fouled by Uriel Segura. Lopez pulled the Cardinals to within 76-63 with 1:23 with a jumper before Segura made another three-point basket of his own to extend the lead back to 16.

Minor’s two free throws with 23 seconds left made the final score 81-67.

Texas State evened its record to 10-10 and improved their Southland Conference mark to 4-2 with the win in front of 3,519 at Strahan Coliseum on Wednesday night. It is the best start in SLC play for the Bobcats since 2003-04 when they had a 5-1 record in their first six conference games.

“This is fun isn’t it,” said Texas State head coach Doug Davalos. “It’s fun watching this team play. We went through the gauntlet at the beginning of the season, but we have good combinations now and they are executing.”

Texas State never trailed in the game against the Roadrunners, who fell to 12-6 overall and 2-3 in the Southland Conference. In addition to Johnson’s 22 points and 10 rebounds, Ryan White netted 14 points and John Rybak scored in double figures for the first time in seven games with 10 points. In addition, Bidias A’ Moute scored seven points, grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds, and recorded a career-bests of eight assists and four steals.

Texas State took control early when White hit Bidias A’ Moute for a lay-up on the opening play of the game. After Terry Field made a pair of free throws for UTSA, Johnson scored his first points of the night on a jumper in the lane before Demarco Stepter grabbed his own miss and scored on a lay-up to tie the score for a second time at 4-4.

Then, the Bobcats seized control of the game as Texas State scored 16 straight points to open up a 20-4 lead with 13:29 left in the first half. Johnson led the charge with 16 points. John Bowman also nailed a three-point shot. Then, after Bidias A’ Moute blocked Stepter’s jump shot, he hit Bowman for a fast-break dunk shot. White capped the run when he nailed a cold-blooded, three-point shot from the top of the key.

The Bobcats led by 13 points (34-21) when Omar Johnson stole the ball and drove for a lay-up and Terry Field hit a jumper from the left side to pull the Roadrunners to within 34-25. A couple of minutes later, Morris Smith, IV pulled UTSA to within six for the first time when Devin Gibson hit Smith, IV for a three-pointer with 2:10 left in the period.

After Gibson hit a free throw, Bowman hit Rybak for a three-pointer to give the Bobcats a 41-33 lead. Gibson hit a jumper in the lane to close out the first-half scoring and make the score 41-35 at halftime.

UTSA closed to within one twice during the first six minutes of the second half before Jonathan Sloan scored on a three-point play with a lay-up and free throw after he was fouled by Smith, IV.

The Bobcats extended their lead to eight when Dylan Hale nailed a three-pointer and grabbed UTSA’s miss and threw ahead to Tony Bishop for a fast-break dunk shot that extended Texas State’s lead to 64-56 with 7:56 left to play.

After Gibson made a lay-up to pull UTSA to within 64-58, the Bobcats pulled away again with a 9-0 run. Bidias A’ Moute capped the rally when Johnson stole the ball from Smith, IV, and hit him for a slam dunk to make the score 73-58 with 1:55 left to play.

“If we hadn’t played both halves against UTSA, we wouldn’t be celebrating right now,” Davalos added. “We beat them on the boards and made our shots.”

That sealed the victory for the Bobcats as they went on to win 76-62. The win was Texas State’s second straight and third victory in the last four games. The Bobcats return to action this Saturday when they play host to UT Arlington in a SLC Television Network game at 2:00 p.m. The game also marks Texas State’s annual “Stuff Strahan” contest.

Almond and Mitchell combined for 41 points, and post players Antuan Bootle and Preston Brown added 12 points each to lead Sam Houston State to a 95-64 victory over Texas State. Almond finished the game with 22 points and Mitchell added 19 for the Bearkats, who improved to 11-5 overall and 3-0 in Southland Conference play.

Almond and Mitchell each made a three-point basket in the opening minutes of the first half to give the Bearkats an early 6-0 lead. But, Texas State came storming back with 11 straight points to grab an early lead. Ryan White scored Texas State’s first points of the game with a three-point field goal. Then, Emmanuel Bidias A’ Moute, who made his second start of the season, hit a lay-up and White drove down the lane for another lay-up.

After Sam Houston State’s head coach Bob Marlin was called for a technical foul, John Rybak made both free throws before Sam Houston’s Lance Pevehouse hit one of his two free throws to stop Texas State run. Sam Houston State closed to within two points, 11-9, when Preston Brown made a jumper in the paint.

The Bobcats outscored the Bearkats 11-7 during the next five minutes to take a 22-16 lead with 8:43 left. During that stretch, Tony Bishop and J.B. Conley scored four points each and White nailed another trey.

But, the Bearkats seized control of the game as they closed the half with a 27-9 run. Almond and Mitchell combined for 16 of the 27 points. Almond led the way as he scored 11 points in that stretch. He hit a three-point shot to pull the Bearkats to within three at 24-21 after Emmanuel Bidias A’ Moute had scored a lay-up for Texas State. Ashton and Dre’ Murray each made a lay-up to give Sam Houston State the lead 25-24, and the Bearkats never trailed again.

Sam Houston State steadily increased its lead to 37-28 before John Bowman made two free throws and Bishop made the second of his two free throw attempts to pull Texas State back to within six.

But, Sam Houston State scored six straight points to end the half as Mitchell made one of his two free throws, and Almond scored five straight points on a trey and a lay-up off a steal. That made the score 43-31 at the intermission.

The teams battled back and forth early in the second half before Bobcats used a 9-4 run to pull to within 54-45 with 14;22 left to play. But, Sam Houston State answered with a 14-0 run of its own to take a 68-45 lead with 11:18 left to play.

The Bearkats continued to increase their lead to 88-52 with 4:42 left to play before Texas State outscored the Bearkats 12-7 the rest of the way.

Ryan White led Texas State with 15 points, while Emmanuel Bidias A’ Moute added 15 points and Tony Bishop recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. One of the key factors in the game was that Texas State’s top two scoring leaders Cameron Johnson and John Rybak combined for just three points and three rebounds. Johnson, who entered the game as Texas State’s scoring and rebounding leader, was plagued by foul problems most of the game and ended the night with no points and one rebound. Rybak scored the three points and added two rebounds.

The loss drops Texas State to 8-10 overall this season, and the Bobcats fall to 2-2 in Southland Conference play. Texas State plays its second straight Southland Conference road game when the Bobcats travel to Lamar on Saturday, January 24, for a game that tips off at 7:00 p.m.

In a game that featured 18 lead changes and 14 ties, Cameron Johnson scored a career-high 34 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked a last-second three-point attempt to lead the Texas State men’s basketball team to a 76-74 victory over Central Arkansas in Strahan Coliseum on Saturday, Jan. 16.

Johnson was one of three Bobcats to score in double figures as John Bowman netted 15 points and Ryan White tallied 11 points and a game-high five assists as Texas State improved to 8-9 overall and 2-1 in Southland Conference play.

Chris Poellnitz scored 17 points, Imad Qahwash added 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Mitch Rueter netted 10 points for the Bears. Central Arkansas fell to 6-11 overall and 0-3 against SLC teams.

Johnson scored five of his points in the final 1:27 of the game. Texas State trailed 72-71 with 1:27 left to play when he scored on a three-point play with a lay-up and free throw to give the Bobcats the lead.

After Tadre Sheppard made two free throws to tie the score 74-74 with 48 seconds left to play. Johnson came right back to make a lay-up to give the Bobcats a two-point lead with 23 seconds left.

J.B. Conley stole the ball from Poellnitz on UCA’s next possession and was fouled with six seconds left. But, he missed both of his free throw attempts. The Bears grabbed the rebounds and immediately called timeout with four seconds left.

UCA worked the ball up the right sideline to Jared Rehmel, who threw up a three-point shot. But, Johnson came out from the lane and blocked the shot to preserve the victory.

Following Saturday’s victory, Texas State begins a two-game road trip at Sam Houston State on Wednesday, Jan. 20 and at Lamar on Saturday, Jan. 23.

Last night (1/13/10) was my first game of the season and all I can say is that we should not lose a home game to that A&M CC team. There is enough talent there to be a top 3 team in the conference but I believe we will finish towards the bottom. Sure we may get free trip to a suburb of Houston, but if that is this team’s goal then I want no part of it. The goal should be to win the conference and/or the conference tournament. As of right now, that looks unlikely by the poor performance I saw last night.

The players appear to have the talent but their 3-9 record against DI competition is an embarrassment to this University. Considering that we are in Davalos’ 4th year I don’t blame this on the players. They appear to be trying but I don’t see a lot of improvement since Davalos’ second year despite what would appear to be significant talent upgrades and time to recruit his own players.

In consideration of this being Davalos’ 4th year and his DI record is 3-9 and this being Fox’s 13th season and she is 0-9 against DI competition I am very disappointed and someone needs to be held accountable. The records and the 99-18 losses are getting embarrassing, either Dr. Teis needs to do something or he needs to step aside for some one who will.

I don’t see how Fox can salvage the season but I could be wrong. Davalos needs to win 15 games or I will be disappointed, or let me put it to you another way he needs to win 8 more conference games, giving him a 9-7 record and if he is around next year I expect a 20 win season. The bar isn’t set very high, lets hope he can get over it.

All and all, I am tired of being a supporter of a consistent loser, some people have a breaking point and I think Davalos has just about found mine. Maybe I should write Dr. Teis a thank you letter for finding out just how much losing I can take.

Jody Campbell

The Islanders used a pair of decisive runs in the first half and held off a late rally by the Bobcats to hold on for the win and end Texas State’s four-game winning streak and nine-game home winning streak.

Texas State was led by Cameron Johnson’s 13 points and game-high nine rebounds. Ryan White also added 13 points. Tony Bishop also scored eight points off the bench, while John Rybak and John Bowman added seven points each.

The Islanders jumped out to 34-22 lead at halftime as Terrence Jones scored eight points and Marcus Hammonds came off the bench to net seven in the opening period. Justin Reynolds added five points in the opening period.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi jumped out to quick 4-0 lead on a free throw by Reynolds and a three-point basket by Kevin Palmer.

After Ryan White scored a three-pointer from the top of the key, the Islanders seized control with a 10-2 run to take a 14-5 lead with 10:18 left in the half.

The Bobcats used a 7-0 run of their run to close to within two as John Bowman hit a jumper from the free throw and a lay-up off a steal to start the rally. Ryan White capped it with his second three-pointer of the night.

The Bobcats trailed by two with 6:24 left in the half when the Islanders used a 16-3 run to take a 34-19 lead with 1:20 left before intermission. Texas State scored the final three points in the half as Bowman nailed a three-pointer from the left wing to make the score 34-22 at halftime.

The second half began much like the first ended as Islander extended their lead to 45-27 with 14:36 left to play.

From that point, Texas State rallied with a 11-0 run to pulled back to within seven, 45-38, on Cameron Johnson’s jumper in the paint off an offensive rebound.

The two teams battled back and forth during the next four minutes before Texas State used a 5-0 run on a pair of free throws by White and a three-point basket by John Rybak to pull to within 53-50 with 4:58 left to play.

But, that was as close as Texas State could get the rest of the way. The Bobcats closed to within three on a pair of free throws by Rybak and one more free throw by Johnson to make the score 58-55 with 2:04 left to play.

But, Reynolds put the game away when he scored on a three-point play with a lay-up and free throw. Then, Desmond Watt scored on a dunk following a Bobcat turnover to increase Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s lead to 63-55. The Islanders went on to win 68-59.

The loss drops Texas State’s overall record to 7-9 and the Bobcats are 1-1 in Southland Conference play. The Islanders improve to 7-8 overall and are 2-0 in league play.

The Bobcats play their second straight home game this Saturday when they play host to Central Arkansas at 4:00 p.m. in Strahan Coliseum. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi returns home to play host to Northwestern State.
