I *Heart* Radio

September 17, 2009

iheartradioYesterday I went to the athletic offices to get my media passes for the TCU game. As I was there I got to exchange some pleasantries with Texas State Sport Information Director Rick Poulter who always looks like he is working 24/7 for Texas State.

We started talking Bobcat Football which eventually led into the conversation of Bobcat Football Radio or the lack of it in places outside SM. Seems as though the athletic department is working hard to try to have a network of stations set up for the 2010 season. Which is a need since anyone outside the San Marcos can’t hear the games unless they are tethered to their computer.

I’m a huge Minnesota Vikings fan but of course living in Texas limits my coverage of Vikes Football. Well, that was until I found this application on my phone called I Heart Radio. The biggest sports talk radio station in Minneapolis is a subscriber to I Heart Radio, giving me the ability of listen to it anywhere through my phone.

I often fire up the app anytime I am in my car listening to it through the auxiliary connection, or I set it up to my docking station on my home stereo when I am not out and about. Either way I can listen to Vikings football talk radio virtually anytime I want as long as I have my cell phone with me…. I always have my cell phone with me.

This got me thinking about Bobcat Football Radio. Would it be possible for the university to buy the equipment necessary to broadcast KTSW through I Heart Radio? I have heard the investment is somewhere between 15-20 thousand dollars but think about the possibilities.

iheartradiobbNow anyone could listen to a Bobcat athletic broadcast wherever they have cell phone reception. Because of the iPhone all smart phones are now being built to support applications and the I Heart Radio app is FREE to all. This would circumvent the need to purchase air time on several stations and those alumni not living in a close proximity to radio stations broadcasting the games would still be able to tune in. This would not stop Texas State from selling ads for the broadcast creating a healthy stream of ad revenue to pay back the investment quickly and soon turning a profit.

In a market where media as we know it is changing this could put Texas State on the cutting edge. Bobcat Radio on I Heart Radio. I like the possibilities.
