Kentucky Wildcat Forward Transfers To Texas State

Texas State head basketball coach Doug Davalos announced Monday that 6-7, 225-pound forward A. J. Stewart has signed to play for the Bobcats after playing the past two years at the University of Kentucky. He will have to sit out next season season to meet NCAA transfer requirements and play for the Bobcats in 2010-11.

Stewart comes to Texas State after playing in 51 games and making three starts at Kentucky, where he posted career averages of 2.1 points and 1.5 rebounds during the last two years.

As a sophomore in 2008-09, Stewart scored a career-high 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting in 12 minutes of action against Vanderbilt. He also netted nine points against Appalachian State. He tallied six points and a season-best four rebounds against Mississippi Valley State.

During his freshman campaign, he scored a season-high 10 points against Liberty, and netted nine points with five rebounds at Tennessee. Stewart also grabbed a team-high six rebounds to go along with three points in 21 minutes at Vanderbilt that season. He earned the first start of his career against Texas Southern when he scoring five points ang grabbed a career-best six rebounds in 2007-08.

A native of Jacksonville, Fla., Stewart earned All-State honors as a junior and senior while playing for coach Rex Morgan at Arlington Country Day High School. He was ranked as one of the Top Five high school players in the state of Florida by Rivals.com and ranked 71st nationally on Bob Gibbons’ Top 150 Players list.

Stewart averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds per game as a senior while leading Arlington Country Day to a second straight 2006 Florida Class 2A championship. As a junior, he was named the MVP of the 2006 state tournament after averaging 13 points and 11 rebounds.
